The days leading up to the race where getting hotter and hotter. Race day was going to be in the mid 90’s. Race morning was beautiful. It was getting warm already by 7am.
The swim started out fast as usual then eased into a normal tempo. I was very comfortable in the lead pack heading around the buoy’s heading back home. I exited the water just seconds behind the lead swimmer and was comfortable where I was. I had a good transition and headed off on my bike ready to ease into a tempo which I was confident would put me towards the front for the rest of the day.
Once we hit mile 30 I already had about a minute and a half on the chase group. I was feeling good but my legs were getting unusually tired. I was getting fatigued in the back of my legs and back. I realized that I wasn't riding my race bike enough leading up to the race. Riding on a time trial bike you put your body in a lower more bent over position that you use more of your gluts and hamstring. It also can strain your back if you're not used to it. My legs were definitely not used to this position and I began to slow down. The power I was pushing through the pedals was diminished drastically. I was caught by mile 40 and I hung onto the leaders to head into the transition in 3rd.
I was very excited to get off my bike and start running. My run has been improving a lot this season and I was looking forward to putting in a great run. I started the run and soon realized that my legs were not doing well from the bike and it was affecting my running. The heat and the lack of power and strength in my legs had me at a walk many times in the early miles of the half marathon. I was unsure if I could even finish the race. I hung in there and by mile seven I was feeling better and started running a comfortable pace. I was able to finish still in the top 10 even after such a tough day.
I am looking forward to the next race. I will be heading to Disney World for the Half Ironman in 2 weeks. I am confident that I will be better prepared for the day. And I look forward to racing with all my heart.
Thank you all for always believing in me and supporting me along my journey to a successful season and career.
Sincerely,
