Normann Stadler and Michellie Jones both proved they could put in good rides and run a strong enough marathon to insure victory. Stadler broke the bike course record with a 4:18:23 and Jones, while not setting any records on the bike put together a solid swim and marathon to take the Ironman victory by more than 5 minutes. Chris McCormack ran a blistering 2:46:02 marathon, but fell 1:11 shy of taking the top honors.
