Weight Training: Is it Really Necessary?

Two years ago I wrote an article on this very subject. How funny it is to hear some of the same athletes asking the same questions with the same concerns so let’s go over this again...

When to lift weights?

I am in the first couple of weeks of the 20 week half IM program from this site. It is to be my first half and I had a question to pose to the group about when to fit in weight workouts. My off day in the plan is on Mondays. So my main question is would you try to fit in a lift day on Monday or should I just take the day for a total rest day. I want to get in 3 weight workouts a week. These are total body workouts that take about an hour.

Weight Training and Nutrition Periodization

By now, most folks have heard of the term "periodization", which is the scientific term for splitting a triathlon training year into periods and focusing on a specific performance or fitness goal for each specific period. Most triathlon programs that you find in books, magazines and the internet already use some form of periodization, but there are two sorely neglected components of a periodized model that do not receive adequate attention in triathlon programs: nutrition periodization and weight training periodization.

How to Choose Your Off-Season Weightlifting Routine

Resistance training exercise, or weightlifting, is crucial to decreasing risk on injury, increase your strength, and attaining your goals with a balanced body. Those of us who need to lose weight this offseason will appreciate that research has shown a combination of weight training and cardio to sheds more pound and boost the metabolism higher than cardio alone. This is primarily because you A) burn several more calories per day for each drop of fat that you replace with a fiber of lean muscle and B) have a larger hormonal response to resistance training vs. cradio.

Scared a ten year-old might steal my lunch money

I am 6'3" and currently tipping the scale at an intimidating 168. Getting into this sport has given me a great deal in terms of discipline, endurance, cardiovascular fitness, etc., and has stripped me of any lingering padding from my days of sitting on the couch, swilling beer and smoking cigarettes (that's right, I used to weigh in at 232 and smoke a pack a day). It has not made me look all too brawny in my spandex tri-suit. Now however, I am looking to take the next step in my fitness and add a little weight training to my routine.
