Drinks pre-race and during

I've been doing weekly training tris (400m/10mi/5k) and have been experimenting with a lot of different drinks before and during the event and find myself stuck. I'd like something more than water (during the race, at least) but Gatorade makes me nauseous and, after that, there are just so many options, I'm not sure what to do.

Drinking on the Run

OK, this is probably going to sound strange, but is there a proper or preferred method for taking in fluids while on the run? When I try to drink (no matter what amount) while running, my breathing rthym gets all screwed up which affects my pace and mental outlook on the remainder of my run. This doesn't seem to be a big deal on the bike only on the run. Pain is the sensation of weakness leaving the body!
