Vermilion Olympic Tri
I wasn't happy about not being able to use my bike for this, but taking mine was not an option. Friday morning I woke up at 3:00am and decided to take the pedals and aero-bars off my bike so I could put them on the bike I'd be using. At 4:30am I gave up trying to find the tools I needed and went back to bed. At the airport, they took my co2, which I should of expected, but they also took my 2 Stinger packs. I hope everyone on the airplane felt safe since my 60 grams of honey was not on board. No biggie, as long as I had goggles, shorts, running shoes, helmet, and a bike, I'd be fine.
Swim: 22:41 64/121
I checked my watch at the start of the 2nd loop, and the time was around 11 min. Finishing the swim in low 20's didn't seem right. My other 2 swim splits this year were 28:19 and 26:46. Plus, I haven't done any swim workouts since moving to Florida 6 weeks ago. The course had to be short, but I was happy to finish close to the top 50%. It was a PR, but in comparison with others in the race, I've finished higher before.
T1: 1:47
The guy next to me complimented my Home Depot bucket as I was sitting on it to tie my shoes. No bike shoes with velcro straps, and no rubber bands holding my pedals and shoes off the ground, just my running shoes.
Bike: 1:20:16 70/121
Over 7 min slower than my race 8 weeks ago. Ouch. About 100m into the bike, my shoelace got caught on the front sprocket. After tucking my laces in, I found out the straps that go over my toes won't tighten. Lastly, the speedometer didn't work and I opted to not bring my ForeRunner. 3 small annoyances, but considering everything that can go wrong on a bike, I wasn't complaining. The tires had air, and every time I pushed the pedals down, the bike moved forward. :) The bike leg started in a lane about as wide as a golf cart path. This wasn't just for people leaving on the bike, but people were coming in from the sprint. Tight squeeze. As for the rest of the bike, a lot of the roads were rough, and it seemed like half the downhills had people waving flags and telling you to slow down due to tight turns at the bottom. Needless to say, it wasn't a fast course. My biggest complaint wasn't the course nor the lack of bike shoes/pedals, it was the lack of aerobars. My arms got tired.
T2: 0:26
A PR!
Run: 48:18 41/121
I left T2 at 1:45:xx, so I knew this was going to be the first triathlon where I didn't get a PR. Maybe I should of tried for a 44 min 10k to break 2:30:00, but on fresh legs I can barely get below 45 min. I opted to take the easy way out and cruise. The run was still my best split in comparison with the rest of the field.
Total: 2:33:29
About 3 min slower than my race 8 weeks ago.
After the race came the hard part, riding a crotch rocket 900 miles. The motorcyle ride was by far the toughest endurance event I've done.
I was at this race and I enjoyed it. I agree the bike course roads were a bit more rough than I would have hoped, but all-in-all this race was planned well and ran as smoothly as any other race. I especially appreciated the volunteers and their enthusiasm during the race. It's nice to have a cheering section without having to drag parents or other friends along. I wrote a report on my blog here, so read it if you like...
