Last Minute C Race
On Tuesday I heard that there was 5k right by where I work on Saturday. Unfortunately I work 60+ miles from where I sleep, but I decided to sign up anyway. This weekend will be the second time I've seen my brother since the Flying Pig Marathon in early May (he did the half, and I did the marathon). He left for basic training 2 days after the race. I thought he would enjoy a short race, and it would be a good reason for my aunt, uncle, and 2 cousins to travel to Pensacola beach. Turns out that my brother didn't want to do the race, and the rest of the family didn't want to travel. Luckily, my brother did come with me to the race, so it wasn't a total bust.
Left before 6:00am for the race that starts at 7:30am. Parked at my work parking lot around 7:10 and went to my desk to verify some race info. Turns out that the shuttle that takes runners from the finish to start line is done at 7:00. Like an idiot, I figure I can just run to the start as a warm-up. I estimate it's less than a mile away. I point my brother to the finish line, and I take off for the start. About 2 miles later, I'm sweating like crazy, and at the start line just in time. Hardest warmup I've ever done.
Not much to report about a 5k. I ran for about 20 min, then finished. Time = 20:28. I ran a 20:01 in March, and a 21:01 in April, so this is right where I expected to be.
After the race I cooled off and walked/jogged to the car with Travis to get beach towels and sandles. Then we went to the beach and relaxed for a while. BIG MISTAKE. Luckily we didn't have suntan lotion, so we walked to the nearest store to buy some. That's when I found out that after the race, people don't take off, they go to the bars near another beach to drink and listen to a band. By the time I got there, the 20 kegs of beer were gone. Not cool! :(
I did find out why the race was called "The Bushwacker 5k." A Bushwacker is a drink with rum that every bar on the beach serves. I also found out that I placed 3/48 in my age group. No Way?! With a time of 20:28? Cool. :) The awards had not been given out yet, so I stuck around to drink a few bushwackers and collect my hardware.
As for training, this is the first time I've ever run 40 miles in a week, so it's been a good week of running. Now I'm due for an easy week, but since I have an olympic tri in 2 weeks, I'm planning on pushing this week (44 miles maybe?), then going easy the following week. Time will tell how the plan works out.
