Running in the Heat

posted on July 18, 2008 by snapdragon

After a long cold winter, and wet spring, it's finally hot in Wisconsin. Too hot. I've always had problems with heat. My body really has a hard time. My face turns purple, my stomach gets sluggish, my skin gets salty.
Runner's World has great ideas for dealing with the heat: <Beat the Heat  Stay Cool

I try to run/bike during cooler portions of the day. I've tried salt tablets. And I play it safe. <
What do you do when it's hot?

I run early or late most of the time. I drink plenty of water during the day. once in a while I run later so I can acclimate. I also slow it down.

When I lived in vegas, yeah the desert, we'd get up at 4am so we could be done with our workouts before it started getting hot around 10am. Even at 4am it was in the 80s. Headlights, taillights...

Now that I'm in MN it isn't as hot, but it sure is muggy as all get out. I think it's just something you need to suffer through. Wednesday morning I got up and ran 7 miles... I was sweating so much even my shorts were wet.

jhudalla, you just described FL.
I live on the beach (daytona), and it's not only warm/hot but it's so humid that any run over 2miles and you're wet.
When wringing out my running tank/shirt, I have to think that if I were sweating that much I'd be seriously dehydrated.

I am actually waiting and running when it is hotter and more humid these days so I can prepare for IM KY. I'm trying to get my body adjusted so on race day after a swim and bike I don't bonk on the run in the August Louisville heat. I bring lots of fluid, electrolytes, and gels.

I keep it to early mornings or late evenings.

I live in DC - tons of nasty humidity. If I have to run/bike during the hottest hours, I just make sure to stay hydrated and listen to my body. I've found out (the hard way, unfortunately) that cutting my workout a few minutes short during the hottest hours is better than pushing through and having to take a few days to recover.

But, I'm not training for an IM either :)

In Texas, if I don't get up for an early run, I head indoors and hit the treadmill. Boring, I know, but at least it isn't 100 with 50% humidity.
