Disc Wheels
i would only ride one when you are comfortable and feel good with your bike. Also, its best for flat, non-windy conditions. If there are alot of hills then the extra weight will be noticeable. If its windy, then you may be blown around on your bike.
Discs are actually make a greater difference as the wind gets stronger. Short answer: ride a disc whenever it's legal; you'll be faster for it. Until you get blown off the road.
As for a weight penalty, I don't really see this as a problem. My zipp 900 weighs 980g. My Bontrager x-lite tubular rear weighs 870g, and is considered a lightweight, "climbing" wheel. There's added weight, yes, but the disc also brings added stiffness. The torque applied to the axle is directly transferred to the tire and into forward motion. Spoked wheels will have a wind-up where you actually rotate the hub in relation to the rim. It's more noticeable the slower you are going.
I agree with xc800. You should use the disc or cover especially when there is moderate-strong winds.
I hear that cross winds auctally make you slower. Thoughts?
