Base training is SO SLOW!

Today was a base training day. I do enjoy the long runs but they are so painfully slow...

What are your race paces for 5k, 10k? Is 13 minute miles realistic as a slow run? Or, are you running...too slow?

That's nearly walking pace. Really, if you feel you should be running faster, then run faster. As CadenceGuy's post implies, if your 5k/10k pace is nearly that (ie, 11:00 or 1200ish), then yes, stay there. But if you're sub-10 then 13:09 per mile is a waste of time. You aren't actually improving anything running that slowly. You are making it more complicated than it needs to be if you are fanatically adhering to the 'slow' base period.
