Chlorine & Water = my kryptonite

posted on January 2, 2009 by f1oored

I started swimming and running again this week after a six month layoff and the pool is killing me.  I did my third swim of the week this morning and my whole body is sore now.  Welcome to Hurtlockerville population, me!

I've decided to actually learn how to swim this year instead of just wind-milling my arms through the water like a retarded baboon and hoping for the best. Last year I approached swimming like I did the running and biking. The more laps I do the faster I will be in the water. I finished my 1/2 mile race swim in 17min 47sec (272nd place out of 450) and nearly died in the process. Needless to say, something has to change this year.

So this year I will focus on my form and try to become an efficient swimmer. Learning to breathe properly is going to be the biggest challenge. Before, I would look forward when I took my breath, neck cranked straight back forcing my legs deep into the water like two boat anchors. It was an abortion. My neck, shoulders, and lower back always hurt after swimming (I wonder why). Now I'm actually listening to instructions from the good swimmers instead of being offended by them like a fool. I have to concentrate constantly but swimming already feels easier. Head down, legs up, breathe on the side. My form still makes real swimmers want to vomit but it's improving.
Cheers

If you do hurt, hurl towards the intake/filter holes. The pool usually gets closed for about 6 hours if biologicals are introduced.

As for the swimming, the better you get at it, it them makes one of your other disciplines become you weak link. Two years ago it was my swimming, this year it is my runnning. Maybe next year it will be my biking as I am run focused this year.

Sounds like you're going about it the right way this time! The nice thing about swimming is that your times can get faster really rapidly with technique work.
