I have my first marathon coming up on November 10th and I know I will be ready....I just dont know how ready. I had a solid long run yesterday and felt great, but I am not sure how to approach the race. I want to race it....not just run it.

My run yesterday was :
20.47 miles, 2:40:48, 7:51 pace, 152 avg HR, 177 max HR.

I would like to run 3:15 but am I pushing it?

Any thoughts would be great.

Since you set 3:15 as a goal, why not drop 5 minutes and attempt to qualify to Boston? The different between a 3:10 and 3:15 is a7:15 pace compared to 7:26.

Is 177 the max HR you hit on the 20 mile run, or your MaxHR?

Being your first Mary...relax...stick with your plan, but don't worry about your time. Too much can go on that day that may have an adverse or positive effect on how you do. What if it's 80 degrees that day...or we finally get some rain and it's a real soaker...Get this one under your belt then shoot for a specific time later on.
But hey...I'm an old fart and the soul of caution!
Best of luck!

Why not go for it. But don't make it your #1 goal. Make it the last in a number of goals. Enjoy the experience the way you want to enjoy it. But don't let the goal of a specific time or Boston get in the way of the accomplishment of your first marathon.

I was obsessed with running a 3:10 in my first and when it became obvious it wasn't going to happen I let it ruin my experience. Didn't even raise my hands or get excited at the finish. Didn't feel proud at all. I acted like a knucklehead for a good 30 minutes before my wife set me straight. Learned a lot from the experience though. Good luck.

You could go for it, but enjoy the experience. If it isn't working out just go with the flow and enjoy the finish.

Maybe both things will work out for you.
