Has anyone looked though the Ironman World Championship Media Guide? First off, I found this guide to be filled with a lot of cool information. On page 56, they outline the demographics of the particpants in this years race and the thing that stood out to me was the Avg income ($161,000) per athlete. Does that seem unusually high to anyone else?

I guess there could be enough high paid executives participating to really pump the average up, but it did make me take notice to the fact that I maybe working way to hard for not enough pay :(

Seems high to me. Must be some really sweet bikes among the age groupers.

That just may be the way things are. People who get paid that much should be able to afford the free time to train, the best equipment, professional trainers, cost of registration, cost of travel, etc, etc.

But also remember that $161,000 is the average per athlete. That can be thrown off fairly easily. As someone who works 50 hour weeks to make less than a third of that, I'd be more interested in the median income and profession distribution.

A bit higher than I expected, but not much. And.....that would be low for an executive salary.

That guide does sound really interesting to check out. I love random factoids like that!

I agree that the median income would be more instructive, but it probably sells fewer sponsorships!

I wonder how many people qualify but can't afford to make it all the way to Hawaii for a race?

I'm not surprised by the income level...This year the average income at IMLP was 145,000. No idea if that was household or per athelete...You sure stewarba that wasn't per household?
When you think of all the CEO's who go and Investment types and fund managers they can really jack up the total...
Triathlon...especially at the Iron distance level is the sport of the well off.
I say well off because the average household income in the US in 2006 was $48,201 (Census.gov) and I'll never see much more than that. To really excell you have to hve a lot of disposable income. I've always said that people who do well at IM's or who do a lot of them, have deep pockets. No offense meant...just what I've seen over the years.

So if I get to Kona does that mean I should expect a raise after that :D

I wish I had that much 'disposable income'

Actually I think most of my income is disposable.

I don't seem to keep much of it

Nothing to it, but to do it

Just because you gross 161k does not mean you take home 161K--- once you are taxed and 401k comes out you are down around 100k ..really not THAT much money in the whole scheme of things. Maybe I am just living in a cloud so PLEASE don't take offense. How do you afford race fees (for us its x2), races, equimpment, vacations and your mortgage on less especially if you have kids?

(All this is good natured,of course, Britt) I took home 32K last year...so I'm not hearing your complaint about 100k ! If I'm forking out a lot for a race like an IM or even $100 for a 50 miler...it's a hit.
But these are things I love, so I let other things go. My wife and I keep seperate money so we don't have a combined...She pays for her stuff...I pay for mine and we share House expenses.
I'm not complaining...I could get a second or third job!

NOOOOOO---NOT COMPLAINING! Just curious:confused: . With 2 of us at $500 each for a IM, plus travel, hotel etc, and then $100 a pop for a marathon (again x2 ) , travel for that (you get the idea) running shoes at $140 each...blah blah blah. I am just amazed that people can do it is all I am saying.

I guess for me, I had pictured more of the starving amature athlete especially for a race were the majority of competitors had to qualify to gain entrance. While I'm sure the executives can afford the best toys, the ones I know tend to work more hours than the guys doing the grunt work.

I did conceed in my original post that the number were probably skewed with some outlyers but here is exactly what is said in the media guide (Cut and pasted)...

There are nearly 1,700 triathletes participating in the 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship ranging in age from 19 to 78 years old. These men and women come from diverse ethnic, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some are professional athletes, some are elite age group competitors and some are determined weekend warriors who squeeze in workouts at all hours of the day and night.

Ironman Athlete Demographics:

Average Annual Income: $161,000
Average Age: 37
Gender: Male 70%, Female 30%
Education: (Post Secondary) 95%
Occupation: (Professional; Executive) 72%
Access to Internet: 97%
Daily Internet Use: 60%

geez. i fit everything in that demo on the nose, except the 161K. if i made that much i'd definitely be racing more and traveling to cover more races. obviously the execs are skewing the numbers as all the web site owners, coaches, professional atheltes i know don't even scratch that.

i'd have to believe that household though, which would make sense and isn't that crazy. figuring the typical triathlete (especially Ironman) is type A personality with extra time and probably married to type A person so that's only 80K per person. still a far cry from what my statement says but that makes more sense to me.

Otherwise I want to be adopted by the family pulling in 322K per year. I can cook, clean house, and manage your websites ;)

it takes a few celebrities and top CEOs that make $10 million/yr to throw the whole bell curve out of wack.

Well there is another demographic we haven't considered...The number of athletes who have eaten their way through their home equity to feed the addiction! Thank God the house is in my wife's name! ;)

A few guys like Bill Bell - retired millionaire with big investments and all those rich Japanese guys offset the struggling students I guess.
I wonder how many lied about their income, padding it a bit just because. Not everybody likes filling out questionnaires.

I just hope the WTC doesn't use this data as an excuse to raise entry fees!
