Foam Roller Question

Quick question for those of you who have used the foam roller with a lot of success. I have had off and on IT band issues over the last few months. I have a pretty intense flare up about a week ago. I have been using the foam roller around twice a day, really working the IT bands, for about a week. I noticed that my everyday (non-running pain) went away pretty quickly. However, after taking a week off and really working the IT bands, I went for a run yesterday and wasn't more than 7 min in when the irritation in my knee surfaced and I shut it down on the spot to prevent further damage. I am going to phys. therapy tonight but I wondered for those of you who swear by the foam roller and have seen success, generally how long before you have been able to get back running again after having the IT band flare up? Thanks....

I wouldn't be as concerned about the foam roller as much as the recurring problem. A few things to consider:

are your shoes correct for your running type? Check with your LRS

have you increased mileage to quickly? s/b no more than 10% roll up per week or 2.

are you a heel striker? check evolution, pose or chi running technique.

You shouldn't get back to running until it's healed or it will just keep recurring. If you continue with PT, check that with the therapist.

Good luck

The first time I got it, it was about two months before I was running again (still tightness in the knee, but at least I was running). I had a flare up last month and the same results took about two weeks. I still have a little tightness, but I can run tempo and stuff if I rest plenty afterwards.

Interesting Thread.

I work with mine about 3 times per week. I find that when my ITB is going away, it usually ends up in the area right above the lateral knee. If it comes back, it manifests itself in the hip.

Be careful not to "over-roll".

Thanks for the help....What do you mean when its going away it ends up right above the knee? Do you mean that is where it hurts when you are using the foam roller or when running. I have noticed as I have been using the foam roller the last couple of days its hurts the most on my IT band right above my knee.

PT tonight..so that should help and give me more clarification. Even though I was just there 2 weeks ago! I wasn't having the problem really when I went in. Just wanted to learn prevention and make sure I didn't need orthotics. Now here I am, 2 weeks later, with a bad flare up!

Hi:

More times than not, my ITB it noticeable in the hip area. As I roll it out, it seems like I can roll out the whole band, except for the last little area above my knee. (Where it bothers me now)

I also use orthotics, for help in my over-pronation.
