Active Body Armor
yeah, non-newtonian fluid type stuff. A buddy of mine at under armor said they were looking into it but it was cost prohibitive at the time. Hope your washer doesn't apply enough stress to cause it to stiffen.
I don't own any of this stuff yet and have been fortunate enough to avoid hurting anything more than my ego on my bike, but man would this stuff be cool. I saw it on another web2.0 site and thought I'd share what's coming out with the rest.
Gear is already too expensive
But hey, I'm excited about the future!
Thats really cool, dunno about how that would fit in to sport-wear of this type anyway. Certainly would help from puncture wounds in a big pile-up, but in a body-ground impact I'd probably want something softer between me and the ground instead of something just as rigid.
Paintball would totally work for this though :)
But the majority of injuries from crashing aren't impact-related....they're abrasions from sliding on the road. I think the guys who wrote the "applications" part of the website don't ride bikes.
EDIT: ^Oops.....beat me to it.

Not fast enough.
I hope they don't make shorts out of it - you'll be exiting transition only to get a kick in the butt from a similar age group competitor - your pants go rigid and you hit the ground - hard to waddle 26.2. :)

Not sure if anyone has posted anything about this yet but in the last year a new type of fabric has been developed. The fabric used in the Dow Corning Active Protection System is soft and flexible until impacted, when it becomes rigid, not only at the site of impact, but throughout the material, thus protecting the entire area of the body covered. When it bounces back to its soft consistency, it can be laundered and worn again and again.
Can you imagine?
