Protecting the skin and hair
First the easy one ;): Get your hair wet before you put the swim cap on (I stick my head under a shower for a second). Having the wet hair makes my hair suck up less chlorine, and keeps it from being as dried out.
I also have some eczema issues, and found that the best bet was to be sure to shower right out of the pool, and soon after workouts that leave me sweaty. I found a soap that works great for me: it's an all natural peppermint one (smells great!) and I use that after swims. I found some lotions made the issue worse, and some made it better. In the winter I tend to use some lotion after showers (or during flareups) but not the rest of the year. When it is really bad, I have a prescription cream/lotion that is great for helping control it!
As for the indents, I find the goggle ones go away by the time I finish driving to work, so I tend to ignore it.
Perhaps get a referal to a skin specialist and see what they can do for you? That's how I got the skin stuff that works great, and it really helped to just get fears calmed and to realize it would all be ok (I had some VERY bad fully body episodes before I knew what it was that had me worried about it and tris with it -- my first flare-ups were around my first IM).

I get indents around my eyes from the goggles and even swim cap.. i don't stress, it's gone after an hour or 2 and everyone knows I swim some morning's before work so I don't care!
The chlorine issue may get better in a little while. The pools around here all have super high chlorine levels because of that spyro...whatever parasite that still has all of the pools closed to kids under 5. Let's hope it gets better for you when the chlorine levels come back down to normal.
As for the goggles, I must have a wierd shaped face or something because I always had trouble with my sprint goggles when I was on the local swim team as a kid. I've taken a hint from my SCUBA classes and try on the goggles before I buy them. Look at the floor and push the goggles onto your face without putting the strap on. If they stick, they will more likely be a good fit. TYR work for me but Speedo do not.

swiming can keep fit our body and our mind both. it's a aerobic activity and it does have really lots of advantages for us. But, i've a questoin who can swim how they protect their skin and hair from water.
Swimming used to dry out my skin BIG time. I was crusty, flaky, gross. Lotioning afterward helped a little, but the biggest help for me has been to apply lots of lotion BEFORE swimming. It acts as a buffer against the pool chemicals. I still lotion afterwards too, and the combination of pre- and post-swim lotioning is that I don't have any more skin problems. Hope it works for you too.
Does anyone do the wet the hair and slather conditioner on it before donning the swim cap trick? I tried it once, and my swim cap popped off my head after about 3 laps! :)
I'm getting my hair colored again this Friday, so I'm anxious about stripping the (expensive) color out of my hair.
I don't color my hair, so I'm no help on that one :)
I usually do the "wet the hair" before the swim cap but haven't heard the conditioner one.

I recently had some really expensive highlights put in my hair that I didn't want to get ruined. The salon recommended Kerastase - Gelee Aqua-Proof.

It isn't cheap, but still a lot less then having to redo the highlights! It is suppose to protect your hair from UVB, salt water, and chlorinated water. :)
Kylie, you're lucky!!
Thanks for the recommendation, JCarlson. I'll check it out.
I color my hair all the time to the point that I really don't know what my natural hair color is anymore, :) and I use a shampoo bar by Basin called "swim repair". I use it right after getting out of the pool.
My friend gave me a barrel about two years and I love it. It gets rid of the chlorine smell and doesn't strip my color. I don't know about highlights though. Each bar really isn't that expensive and they last me about a month. :)

I DO color my hair. I'm in my mid thirties with like 60% gray hair!
I put stuff in, but my cap hasn't popped off. Actually, what I do is before I leave, I put on either some pomade or some leave in conditioner such as garnier nutrisse for colored hair. Then I get it a little wet in the shower just before. I think the hair would be a lot more slippery with wet conditioner. My hair hasn't smelled like chlorine since I started doing that. I guess that is a good sign.
And thanks for all of everyone's tips here! I really appreciate it.
I agree with Airborne about using lotion before swimming. My dermatologist recommended that I use Aquaphor. It does work really well.
Once a week or so I'll do the conditioner under the swim cap mostly because the chlorine dries my hair out. I've never had the problem with the cap coming off but I have shorter hair so that may be why I've never had that problem.
Have you tried the bigger swim masks? They might work better for you. But I find that the google marks around the eyes just add to my crazy triathlete mystic at work.

That's funny!
Just fyi, as I am starting back in the pool this weekend I went to the salon to buy the Kerastase product recommended above. I was looking at all the Kerastase aqua products, and the staff asked if they could help me. When I said I wanted something to protect my hair from chlorine, they immediately pointed to the Gelee Aqua-Proof. I guess it really does work! :)

Hi all,
I have sensitive skin. It turns red everytime someone pokes fun at it. And there is this big bully at the pool called chlorine. Water is okay, but sometimes it can be mean too.
And those goggles! They certainly leave an impression.
Anyway, seriously, I do have a tendency towards excema. I slather Eucerine cream on my skin after every shower. I've got it under control now, but winter is a bad season and now I've added this 2-3 times a week exposure to the chlorine.
As for the goggles, I've tried to get them looser so that they don't leave an indent, but water just comes in. I've got them as loose as possible without them letting any water in or slipping off and I still get the two hour circles. Is this just me? I do get impressions in my skin pretty easily (like when I carry my baby for a few minutes, I get fabric folds impressed into the skin), and if someone (me included) just touches my neck or collar bone area the skin turns red.
So should I just let this vanity trip go or is there a solution?
Also, do the swim caps keep the chlorine out of the hair?
