Kona Winners Prediction!
So my prediction? Another bike split record for Stadler on the way to victory #3.
He's got a new and improved bike, and he'll be trying to put some distance between him and the Macca Attaca before the run. I'm guessing and average of 37mph and he catches fire on the downhills, dousing himself with gatorade to put out the flames. That's where I stand. :D
I don't know about that bike course record for Stadler -- not because of any ability of his, but because the winds have been calm the last 2 years, and from reports of people already there they are stronger this year, and expected to be present for the race.
I'd love to see Michillie win again -- she is one of my heros :)

I seem to be a minority when it comes to Macca, but I like him. Having spent some time in Australia this past year and getting to know some Aussies, I just think it’s in their nature to be outgoing and somewhat cocky. All of the great athletes know they are great, but some are just more outspoken about it that others. I guess most people are put off if there is an air of arrogance about an athlete but I don’t have much of a problem with it – they just have to back it up and Macca hasn’t done that yet on center stage. The key for Macca to me is that he just can't let Stadler build such a large lead on the bike. You know Stadler will bust out on the bike because that’s what he does, but you can't let him build such a huge lead there. If it comes down between those two, Macca overtakes Stadler somewhere around mile 20 on the run. I would really like for an American like Tim DeBoom to re-emerge but I don't know that he has enough in him anymore. Are there any other Americans that could emerge in Kona for the win?
However, after saying all that, my official response on the winner on the men's side is Rutger Beke I think he will surprise everyone and pull it off. Assuming he has recovered from his leg injury he should be in good shape with some time off in late July and early August. He has been hovering for the past few years and with a win at IMAZ this may be his year. Being from Kentucky, it is in my nature to look for the horse showing up on the board at ~10:1 when betting on a race ;-)
On the women's side, I am going with Natasha Badmann. I hope she still has enough in her, but I can't root against that Smile :) Of course I would love to see an American emerge on the women’s side as well but I don’t know if there are any that are in good position to do so this year – thoughts?

I agree with Kylie that a new record on the bike is something very difficult to do, since last years record came with great weather conditions (not normal for Kona).
I know macca has what it takes to win I just hope he built enough bad Karma with his comments to prevent him from winning. I also hope they have more race officials following the pointers so we can prevent drafting allegations like last year.

Well everyone knows I'm biased. So I predict a great race from Chris (Lieto). If the winds are strong, that plays in the favor of Chris, Normann, and Sindballe. They can push the watts and build a bigger lead and the rest will be spending more energy on the bike which could slow down the run times. That said, last year McCormack ran like no other. I think he underestimated Normann ability to run and ride for that matter, allowing too large a lead. They let him go straight out of town, that won't happen again. So I don't see Normann getting that kind of lead on his own.
My top 5 men (in no order): McCormack, Lieto, Stadler, Faris, Beke.
top 5 women: Jones, Badmann, Major, Ficker, Corbin
I like Macca - and hope he does well. Kind of refreshing to have a guy speak his mind.
Regarding the drafting - how did Stadler witness any drafting since he was out front the entire bike leg? - if he didn't see it, then he shouldn't speak of it.
It'd be nice to have some Americans win so going for Lieto and Ficker (Or maybe Gollnick) :D

I'm pulling for Macca for for the reasons mentioned by RV. I'd love to see it go down to the wire in a run off.
And for the women - I'm rooting for the American Ficker.
I'll go with Faris to regain the title and Badmann to win one more.
Have to root for the hometown, and just a wonderful person to boot
Ficker :)
Men's side...I still need to look at things.

As I said..... I know Macca has what it takes BUT I´m a strong believer that you don´t worship yourself even if you have reasons to do so.
Call me superstitious but I´m the kind of person that believes comments like "not even God himself can sink this ship" where the exact same reason why the Titanic is sitting under water.
Maybe when Macca stops saying he´s the best even if he hasn´t won (kona for that matter) will be the day he gets his tittle.
Don´t get me wrong I know he CAN do it. But I just don´t like that kind of people.

If we knew who was going to win we wouldn't have to keep up with it race day. That said, I do have my favorites I would like to see win. Tim DeBoom has been trying to dig himself out of a hole since the kidney stone incident at Kona a few years back. Would love to see him do it one more time. And while I am partial to that smile of Natasha, I would love to see Desiree pull an upset.

I understand your line of thinking and its one that is shared by most people, but here is the problem with it (in my mind). We tend to put so much into one event that we totally disregard the accomplishments of the others. We as fans tend to measure an athletes greatness based on one singular event. I think that all Chris has ever tried to say is that he feels he is the best at what he does based on the entire body of his work which includes other IMs, 70.3 and whatever other endurance sports he has competed in. To say that he isn't as good as Sultan or Stadler based on Kona just isn't fair. There are too many variable in a one and done event to allow that kind of judgment to be placed on an athlete.
This isn't unique to Triathlon either. There is usually one event in every sport that the public uses to define an athlete or a sports team. Whether its Dale Earnhart and the Daytona 500, Phil Mickelson and the Masters or Peyton Manning and the Superbowl, those athletes greatness was questionable until they won those respective events and I suspect Macca will be no different.
Sports analysts always question an athlete’s ability based on their success on that particular sport's biggest stage. And while I don't disagree with it being a criteria for discussions as one of the all time great athletes in their given sport, I think its sad to dismiss all of the other accomplishments.

i agree somewhat, you do have to look at the overall body of work, but the Championships is to determine the best from the best. His first few attempts were bad, last year he had a great race. No question Chris is one of the best triathletes around, especially when you look at his success at all distances, not many have been able to do that. However, Chris moved to Ironman for one reason, to be the World Champion at this distance and cement his legacy as one of the best ever. He must maintain the attitude of "i am the greatest" otherwise why put so much effort into it. I think if he retires without having become the World Champion, he'll concede that the others were just better.

I agree with you on that! And by no means is my intention to dismiss his proven success as an Athlete. That's why I recognize he has the talent to win.
But again......with his attitude he might be jinxing himself.
And sad or not...even if i could run (just as an example not that I can do this) a 2 hour marathon but couldn't prove it in a race then the guys from Kenya would still be the worlds best even if I could run faster.
And for example..... I would never have bought Lance Armstrong's books if he would have an "I'm the best cyclist of history attitude". It's ok for press and people to say it, not quite him THAT would dismiss a bit of the greatnes of his acomplishments.

A champion has to have the belief that they are the best, if they don't then they won't get to that elite of the elite level.
I think most people would think that LA has a pretty high opinion of himself - And I am a big fan of LA and again I don't see it as a flaw or anything - since he was able to back it up.
Macca has accomplished everything that he has set out for except for Kona, and he said that he has to win there in the next 3 years or it will lessen what he has accomplished elsewhere.
Like LA put the emphasis on the TdF, Macca has put it on Kona. Now we see if he can back it up.

I'm going with Macca, Beke, and Lieto for my top 3. I refuse to put Stadler in there ever since I saw him throw down his bike and cry on national T.V a few years back. Would like to see Deboom in there somewhere too. Don't really know much about the women, other than Desiree Ficker is HOT.

I think its gonna be red5 by about 20 minutes.
"now I only have good days and great days."
Peter Reid!!! (I wish)
I am on the Macca boat as well after reading the recent interviews in Inside Tri and Triathlete Mag. Faris is another one to look out for. I don't really want to see Stadler win. I don't think he should be in the big 3 club.
Being Aussie I have to root for the double!!
If you don't believe you're the best, then you can never be the best. The only difference between Macca and the others is that he actually says it out loud, where the rest just think it. It's an Aussie thing.. We're all big heads!

Punch my ticket for the Macca train as well. Again though, I would love to see an American finish on the podium. And I really hope Desiree Ficker wins the women's race, she's got a pretty smokin' body.
My dark horses for the podium: Jan Raphael for the men and Samantha McGlone for the women
Going for the darkhorse. Beke. He can outrun them all, if he has a good bike he will be there in the end!
Bentley for the women. Cause she is awesome, has the drive, and is Canadiant!
And I really hope Desiree Ficker wins the women's race, she's got a pretty smokin' body.
Well I don't think anyone will argue about that, and of course America has a manifest destiniy to regain supremacy in the sport that we created (only half joking). Go USA! Long Haul Truckin' and Fried Chicken! Whoo hoo!
If Desiree can hang with a fast swim crowd then she can beat anybody else on the land sports. But will she?
Go America! Coke! Big Macs! Misguided religous ferver! Woo hoo!
And speaking of Americans - I would be so happy to see Chris Lieto take a podium spot, but I'm not ready to put any money down. Come on' Chris, your country needs you. Will you answer the call?

Thats what I'm saying:
Ooops, did I say the quiet part loud!
Here in the US, we have been beat down with political correctness for so long people begin to question whether they should say what they think and feel for fear of being labeled a certain type of person and I think it has started to spread into other facets of conversation. You really think hard about what you are about to say and by the time you realize that it should be OK to say what you are thinking the moment has passed. Not that I think what Macca says has anything to do with being PC, but its more of a "I think this way and by God I'm going to say it" mentalitly that I think alot of Australians exhibit. It was refreshing meeting the Aussies and working with them this past year. Very polite but not afraid to say what they thought - Cheers Mate!

I was hoping too the Peter Reid comeback was true, but checking the official list the only Reid listed is a 53 year old George Reid.

I´m looking at last years results and based on that I´m guessing this years battle will again be Stadler vs. Macca. Seems to me Al Sultan will be pushing himself a bit harder this year for all the media battle against Macca since last IM but don´t know if he has any real chances of beating him or Normann for that matteer.
I personally would love to see Lieto rise from last years 9th place. But he would have to do a great job to go 15 or more minutes faster this year if he wants a podium spot.
This is going to be an exciting race and personally my bets go for Stadler. But I know Macca will be pushing hard this year (I just don´t want to see him win). I´m also very interested in seeing how Luke Bell has improved during the year. Craig Alexander is another one to follow (not that he has chances of winning this year) but it will be interesting how he evolves from Olympic to IM distance seeing how well he has done in St.Croix.
Now for the Women......
I guess Michillie could do it again. But there´s a lot of great competition out there. I can picture Desiree Ficker in the winner podium also (1st place??? mmmm maybe) But with gals Like Badmann and Bentley out there you never know. Let´s just hope Natascha has a better race this year than she did last year.
My prediction? Well I don´t know but I would love to see Jones win again but love to see Ficker there also. sooo
Let´s just hope the weather is fine and no one has to deal with flats etc.
