So, anyone who has previous experience with this race.....

Just how cold is the water in march? Does it warm up on the bike or do you just get to freeze the whole ride. Is this race relatively easy for a half ironman? It will be my first if I sign up for it. I like to place high in my age group, but from the looks of last years results, getting top 50 in my age group will make me happy.

Found You! I thought that you were going to do Wildflower this season? Thinking of getting a jump on things, eh? :D

Do you really need me to tell you how the Pacific Ocean is going to feel in March? Imagine a refrigerator. Now add salt water. It's basically like a big, choppy margarita, without the fun...

Let's ride on Tuesday... fo' realz...

I did it this year and it was my first half. I was perfectly comfortable in the water with my full suit and neoprene cap. If anything, I was a little warm coming into T1, so I decided to ride without my arm warmers. The morning air was cool though, and five minutes into the bike, I wished I had brought the warmers. It eventually warmed up on the bike though - by about 20 miles in.

As far as easiness - it's my only half but I thought it was pretty hard. The run was rough - mostly concrete, two out-and-back loops; not nearly as scenic as I'd imagined.

It has been interesting weather the last two years (I've always just cheered at that one). 2 years ago crazy cold and rainy most of the day, this last year cold in the morning but a nice day by the end of it. So some years you freeze all day, some you get to warm up a bit.

From what I know of the course, there are a couple good climbs in the second half of the bike, and then often a headwind on the way back into town. I don't think it's the easiest half course out there, but not the hardest, either. Bike profile:

The run is fairly flat, and a couple miles are right by the ocean which is pretty. The parts of it I have ran are along a paved bike/run trail right by the sand. Run profile:

Hey scott, my buddy suggested it to me because he heard that the oceanside one would be easier than the wildflower. Not as much climbing and closer to home which would bring the cost down a bit, not having to drive 5 hours and camp the night before and all that stuff. I already got a full suit so I figure maybe get a cap and some booties to keep me warm in the water. I love running in the cold/rain so that wont bother me, just worried about the bike. I have never ridden my bike in the rain, but I am going to try and pick up some leg warmers maybe today so that I can start riding in the cold. Tuesday I think I can get a ride in.

I might be going down there early on sunday to watch the ironman on versus. I think it is going to be on at 1.

For riding in the rain the trickiest thing will be bike handling... it's scary!!

Just FYI -- I don't think there are any Ironman shows on Versus this weekend... they don't air Kona until Dec (1st, I think). And it looks like this weekend has a break in the airing of the races from this season.
