Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
My advice is to go to all of the pre-race meetings/orientation. I didn't have a chance to go to it for my first race and it could have helped me a lot with the transition area logistics.
Good luck out there!
You're going to have a great race. Let us know how it goes. I think it's awesome that you are getting involved with your son.
Good luck! I'm headed out today for my first race tomorrow. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I feel prepared and ready. I guess that's how most first timers feel, huh? :)

ditto here - not sure how ready I am but I've been looking forward to it for weeks - my stomach's churning already :)

If you have any questions on race day, ask some of your fellow competitors. They were very helpful and friendly. Have a blast!

Is the man that thinks he can.
Yeah, there are plenty of people at any reace more than willing to pass along some tips and advice. Just look around and ask others.
You'll have a great race!
Have a great time and best of luck to all of you :)
And remember... most of the racers will be like the people you have met on here: friendly and happy to help and share info!
survived! too tired to get results, but we did ok. the open water swim was quite an experience, one that pool work cannot prepare you for. i was feeling alright with getting into my own groove with the crawl, but i kept losing the markers! i swear i swam twice the distance zig-zagging! so i changed up strokes alot. once i rounded the first marker, that second one was ...tiny! man it seemed far, but with one month of learning to swim "right", i feel ok about it, next spring i will have a much better time. my fifteen year old son was in the first wave, i was in the third. i told him b4 he got in the water ill see you about two thirds into the bike... several people who over heard that laughed. well it really was at that point when i recognized him... but not until i was right next to him. he said he was doing bad. soon into the bike he stopped and thew up for ten minutes. he was able to catch and pass many who passed him while sick... cause we were cyclists b4 tiathletes. so i asked to help him and his permission to go on.
when i started the run my entire abdominal wall was cramping. i walked. cramped again. walked again. this happened a few more times then i was ok. for about 20 feet. then i got a deep calf cramp. i ended up having to walk the majority of the run. i would run ten feet, sometimes twenty, then walk.
we both finished... my son caught and passed me in the run!
i wanted SO bad to catch him! calf thought otherwise!!
initially he was pretty bummed, i stayed positive on the outside, but inside i was pretty bummed too.
but the postives of this be our first tri, and a pretty long one for a first, blah blah blah. and i (we) realize it was GREAT.
the other competitors were tops. the whole experience was overall just tremendous. i love this and we have a winter to learn to swim(well) and to spot markers as we go.
and whom ever said it was right. EVERYONE involved in the race is as open and helpful as the people on this forum. God i wish it wasn't fall, i'm ready to go again!!!
Good to hear that you liked it! I hope your son is as motivated as you to do another one.
indeed. he is already talking about payback for the same event LOL by that i mean he intends to win next year. which is great as he looks like a skater, walks real slow, long hair, the whole thing, but inside he is a great athlete!
i think i'm gonna go down and get these numbers tattooed on, i like the look:D
Big congrats you two. Great race: pukin', cramps and all, way to hang tough. Nicely done!

Congrats on a great race! Sure, it was tough, but you guys definitely learned a lot out there. :)
kylie,
you're not kidding. i greatly underestimated the difficulty. i was 33rd in my division, my son was 36th in his(of course evereyone else in his was 19, while he is 15). i would have been up in the twenties had i been able to have at least jogged the entire run.
i feel great about all of it and now know what to focus on.

this is it!
my son and i leave tomorrow after i get off work, we will stay close to the race, which starts at 9:30 on saturday.
we are both pretty excited, carbing up, and wondering(i am) about the little unanswerables... like equipment placement at transition, start placement for the swim, etc. oh, and numbers... where they go on and how to get them there...
can't wait, glad i found this sport, glad i found this site. with any luck my previous knee surgeries won't hold me back from doing many more!
