More Doping
This is a never ending battle between the pharmaceutical companies and the sports governance organizations. The pharmaceutical companies develop a new performance enhancing drug… which there is no way to accurately test for up-front…and then by the time the anti-doping agencies develop an adequate test, the next NEW drug comes along. If you get caught then you have a poor doctor, you are careless / stupid, or some other behavior causes you to get nailed (like lying about your whereabouts during a testing period). I bet the Olympics next year is going to be very interesting. Maybe they should hand out plastics medals to all top 3 finishers pending an exhaustive series of drug tests… and then you get your REAL medal in the 2012 Olympics. I am still sticking with my “Black Jersey” idea.
Na, Life Ban. Cheating is cheating any way one looks at it.

or maybe an itchy sweater jersey. Whats worse then being kicked out of the tour de france? being forced to ride it in an itchy tacky sweater
"now I only have good days and great days."
There are two ways to handle to problem in my opinion.
1) You let everyone do whatever substance they want. This levels the playing field again and the people who are willing to risk their health for the sport can go ahead and do it.
2) You start handing out lifetime bans. Obviously the punishment is not severe enough if people are still willing to risk the consequences in order to take a performance enhancing substance. Along with the lifetime ban, cyclists should have to repay all the earnings and endorsement deals that the have made because of cycling.
This is most likely a bad comparison, but do you think that another NFL player is going to risk getting caught dog fighting after what happened to Michael Vick. Odds are he is done as a player because with his pending jail time and NFL suspensions, he is going to be out for a minimum of three years and as a quarterback, you can not be gone from the game this long and make a successful comeback. Also, odds are he is going to have to repay all of his signing bonuses and endorsement bonuses that he received. He will be done with his livelihood and he will have no money to show for it. I doubt any other players are going to be stupid enough to risk this type of punishment to participate in dog fighting.
If you make the punishment severe enough, there is no doubt in my mind that you would be able to stop doping.
I agree that cheating is cheating, but a lifetime ban is rather harsh. Everyone makes mistakes that they regret later on and what about tampering or sabotage? Maybe 2 or 3 strikes and your out for life, but once? Geez BBB and Iron Dan you guys are strict. Look at David Millar…caught / confessed for using EPO, served a 2 year ban and is now a big time advocate and spokesperson for clean racing. If he would have been “banned for life” you wouldn’t have him out there as a role model for younger riders coming in…he would be working at a bike shop somewhere. I really hope Team Slipstream does well, that’s how you eliminate doping…at the grassroots level.
it's gone too far.

It needs to be dealt with strictly, yes, but until they can fairly and consistently perform testing to identify the cheaters it will remain a mess.

Now Marion Jones has admitted to doping after years of denial. She used the standard excuse...I thought it was just flaxseed oil...rrriiiiiiigghhtt...how dense do you think we are?

I think that is in the same category with "No Mom, it's just oregano" OR "Honestly officer, I don't know how that got there... uh, it's my friends car..":p
What is the benefit of rubbing steroid cream on your legs? How could this way of cheating possibly be as effective as direct injection?

I thought this interesting:
---Michael Rasmussen, pulled from this year's Tour de France while wearing the yellow jersey, is now reported to have been racing on Dynepro, a blood-boosting EPO-like product. Dynepro is not on the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of banned drugs because an official testing protocol has not been established. It's made from human cells, so WADA is wary of false positives if naturally occurring EPO is mistaken for Dynepro. Reports say Dynepro has been detected in the urine tests of about 10 other athletes. Rasmussen was on the way to Tour victory when he was sent home for lying to his team, Rabobank. At issue was his whereabouts during missed out-of-competition drug tests.
