I ran yesterday on the treadmill for 3.5 miles, and my ITB felt super tight. So I stopped, and decided to stretch, and did some core workout.

Following this, I went into the pool for some lighy plyos, and then drove home. When I got out of the car, I felt about 10x better, so for the first time since I started training again, I decided to try running on the road.

I live on the edge of a huge hill, so I had only about 200 m of flat road before running straight up for about 3 minutes. I felt 100%. No problems whatsoever. I ran the dirt loop at the crest of the hill, then came back down. A little tight coming down, but perfect once I was running flat again.

Today the ITB is a bit tight, and I'm off today through Friday, because I think all is coming along.

Why woud I feel so crappy on the treadmill, and then so perfect on the road?

Just something you might want to know about treadmills:
They tend to shorten the stride of the runner...Im not sure if that helps...

X Runner:

I have heard this theory before. My XC coach always used to tell me that it pulled one's feet backwards, effectively misplacing a number of joints and ligaments that were conditioned to work a certain way.

Do you put any elevation on the treadmill while you are running? I have heard that ~1º is ideal to mimic the type of position you would have while running outdoors.

I have issues on treadmills as well. Always end up with wicked shin splints from the shortening of my stride.

My guess is either problems with your stride on the treadmill, or like was said already the lack of full warmup.

When you say "lack of warmup", I am confused.

When I normally run, I don't usually perform a warm-up. I just start going. But with ITB issues, perhaps a warm up is needed?
