I have my first marathon a week from today (steamtown) and I was wondering what I should wear. I definatly want to have gel's with me and the only race gear i really have is my tri top and tri shorts. Do running race singlets have pockets in the back? Also should I wear my visor to help with the sweat? Sunglasses needed when the race starts at 8am? thanks

I plan on doing mine next month in the nude. I figure it'll give me that edge by not having all that extra weight.

Seriously though, I'll be sporting a hat/visor. With use of that im thinking sunglasses will just be redundant and uncomfortable.

And nothing else.

I used to run marathons in running shorts and singlet, but ran the last one in tri gear. I found that I didn't get the chaffing that I'd sometimes get from the rubbing friction of loose fitting garments.

Compression tri shorts keep your quads a little more stationary and fresh, something that could be a benefit at Steamtown. Same thing with the top, keeps everything tight and in place, no friction, no bloody nipples should your bandaids come off with the sweat.
Try it out on a long run and see how you like it and as always, don't try anything new on race day.

A sweatband visor is a must to help keep the salty sweat and sun tan lotion out of your eyes. Sunglasses, your call, wear them on your visor and you'll have them if you need them.

Marathon tip: remember the vaseline: feet, inner thighs, crotch, nips, pits and any other hot spots you can think of.

Good luck and have fun.

Oh good call john. Its become so habitual that i forgot to even mention lubing up and taping the nipples. Both pretty key elements to hot hating life after about mile 10.

For years I ran in just a singlet and those spiffy, short, baggy "real" runner shorts. Now, for short races I still do but use a tri top. For longer stuff (10 mile and up) I run in tri shorts and tri top or sleeveless bike jersey...just gotta love those pockets! Less chaffing...good compression on the legs helps with veinous pressure and they show off my legs better!

You might want to try one of these. I find that they are really comfortable, and you can really get a lot of stuff in there. I carry the "journey" pack with me on anything longer than a 10k. I can fit about 6 gels some bloks, chap-stick, and band-aids/athletic tape. I like to fill old chap-stick containers with vaseline so that I have a back-up in case the body glide starts to fail, and extra band-aids never hurt.

The pack doesn't really bounce around even when it is packed full of stuff...

Yeah I hate to say it, but you should really not try anything new race day. Is there a tri top with pockets that you have ran long in? If you are using compression shorts (or tri ones) you can often get by putting gels in your shorts.

What did you do for your longest runs?

Good catch guys.... I didn't see that the marathon was a week away. I thought the OP said, three weeks.

Go with what you know.

Many race number belts have stretchy loops for squeezing gels into. That's what I use. And if you don't like it, it was a small investment so it's not a big loss.

go with stuff you've used in your long runs getting you here don't try anything new now. definitely lube up the nipples cause a chaffed nipple hurts like a mutha and it's kinda freaky to see one bleeding. good luck and have fun!

Just to pound the point home - wear what you use for your long training runs.
I like running in tri-shorts and top - but I train that way so it works for me.

You are a little late to be changing race day apparel. I run in Race Ready LD shorts. I prefer the splits (basically, the side seams are missing) so that they don't ride up. They come with mesh pockets in back that are perfect for carrying Gu and a velcro pocket on each side that will fit a drivers licence.

Go to raceready.com and look at Split-cut LD shorts

I like to use my Desoto 4 pocket tri shorts, for the compression on the pockets for carrying gels.

I like a loose fitting wicking t-shirt, and I use nipguards to prevent 'bloody nipples' http://www.nipguards.com/info.asp

Dude, the best bet is to use what you have used during long run training. Try anything new on race day and can be a mess...trust me I have done that mistake once.
I like split shorts, very confortable, there great desings out there with pockets for gels and stuff.
If you have used race belts, they are useful...
If you have family or friend on the road, plan for then to hand you some nutrition, that saves weight...
I like slevless running shirts...
and to protect nips, I use band aids...
bloody nipples are a pain....
For chaffing...bodyglide is a good option...
For the head, is a must to keep sweat and sunscreen out of your eyes...that really hurts.
Sunglasses are a must these days, it is a priority to protect your eyes. If the day is dark, put them over your visor or hat.
Socks, are also crucial. Make a good choice, they can make a tremendous difference on your performance. Make sure they fit good, not to big, and nowdays there are great options for long distances.
Best of luck my friend!!!
