New IM registration procedures
Just like Canada. Not like Active was ever reliable anyway ;) But dang it's getting tough...
Soon we'll have to qualify! :p

They instituted that pre-race day registration at IMWI this year and it was great. Tho once you have a slot - kinda feel like I wanna keep it as it is getting so hard to get into another one, without being at the race venue to sign up.

If it turns to no online spots in a near future..... IT WILL SUCK!!!
That way I would never be able to do an IM in the states.

That's kind of how I felt this year at IMWI. I felt if I didn't sign up fo next year and wanted to wait until 2009 to do it that there was a chance that you might not be able to get in!

I completely understand the draw to the big Mdot races (I still really want to do Canada and Lake Placid sometime). But reminders about how sucky it is to register also reminds me why I like the "local" irondistances races, too :)

Not necessarily - Internationals often can get into the races around normal channels. IM Australia as an example - I did it this year and just signed up online in '06 - Aussies had to qualify for the race. Maybe they'll go the same route for the NA races.
Not happy with registration the day before the event for participating athletes. Why not the day after the race? My guess is that "no-shows" will further increase. "No-shows" take lots of slots that others could get in. The numbers below are from registration data and results publicly available and include athletes that can't participate due to injury, but still...
(percentage of registered athletes that neither finish nor DNF)
Florida 2006: 12%
Western Australia 2006: 5%
Malaysia 2007: 22%
New Zealand 2007: 6%
Australia 2007: 5%
Arizona 2007: 16%
Lanzarote 2007: 3%
Brazil 2007: 7%
Japan 2007: 9%
France 2007: 9%
Couer d'Alene 2007: 15%
Switzerland 2007: 8%
Germany 2007: 10%
Austria 2007 11%
Lake Placid 2007: 12%
Right, but they know that they get a percentage of no-shows each year - my understanding is that they take that into account when determining the number of slots to release for registration.

The line at IMWI the day before the race was long, the line the day after the race looked even longer. This is becoming more and more like trying to acquire season tickets for some of the pro-sport francise teams; once you're in you're not going to let those tickets go because you're not going to get another chance to get back in.
I just squeaked in online for LP next year and I know I'll be standing on line the day before that race next year, maybe for the next 10 years. IMLP will become my home field Ironman, simply becuase I'm there and I know I can always get in-- at least until they change the rules again.

I don't need to get faster, I just need to get older!
This is rather an odd move. Maybe they've experienced some administrative problems with on-line entry. Or maybe this is an attempt to drive volunteerism among the ranks of triathletes. Who knows. I don't get it. I guess it comes down to them just doing it because they can.
I guess there will still be the community fund slots that you could pay for and for which you could then get a tax deduction.
I went to Chesapeake Man yesterday to watch Beads and gfd (No spoiler here,I wont steal their thunder) A small well run Indie, a family atmosphere a challenging course and you could still sign up as of a week before.
