And if so what? I am curious what gets you guys pumped during training. I have been listening to alot of rock/rap and in particular linkin park and this new band called Critical Bill. Not many people have heard of them but check out their website and tell me what you think http://www.myspace.com/criticalbillmusic

Yes, if I'm not running with someone else. Its a variety from my youth: Southern Rock, Classic Rock, some heavy metal.

sometimes.

Having to run before work it's often dark out. So if I can't see AND can't hear while dodging commuter traffic it could be bad.

But for me, on a treadmill music is almost required to fight boredom. Beastie Boys, Arctic Monkeys, White Stripes, and Zamfir: Master of the pan-flute ;)

Definitely (at least when its not a safety concern like Leroy said).

Mostly power and speed metal: Motorhead, Metallica, Dragonforce, Manowar. I hear "My Spirit Will Go On" starting and I just get an incredible surge of energy. And then Motohead's cover of "Louie Louie" just cracks me up.

I use to listen to music all the time running. I really don't know why, but I quit listening to music cold turkey and enjoy running much more...just looking and taking in the sounds and sights of life are much more enjoyable than music blarring in my ears. On a long run recently, I tried to listen to music again, and took my ear buds out after a few minutes...it was taking away the simple "joy" of running.

So along with this theme. What are some good "kick a$$" tunes for interval training and speed sets you guys recommend??

I listen to music almost always when I run, but depending on what type of run I'm doing dictates what I listen to. Long runs I tend to listen to more easy listening like country. Very even keeled, nothing to exciting. My pace tends to reflect what I'm listening to. If I am doing intervals, bring on the Metal especially the 80s stuff, but I do like alot of today's metal.

BBB - An all around classic Kick "A" running tune: Running Free - Iron Maiden - I prefer the live version.

Don't you think there may be a problem if you "have" to listen to music to run. Would you still run if music was not available anymore?

Not being judgemental or critical, really :) . But just curious about people who don't like running, just for the joy and fun of it. What do you do during races?

I'm going to go along with Tim. I don't like training with music - I feel way less out of touch with my breathing, and my HR, and my body/running in general. I do always get random tunes stuck in my head though while I'm running. Does that count?

Not usually. It doesn't feel safe to me, I feel more out of touch with my body and my workout and less in touch with the world around me, I think it hinders mental preparation for me, and I like to be alone with my thoughts. I also think it would be hard to race 13 or 26 miles without music if I always used it to run with. I saw three people with headphones on in the last race I did (even though they said in the pre-race briefing that it was an automatic disqualification).

That being said, every now and then I will run with music. Usually if I'm feeling really, really unmotivated or need to pep myself up for some reason. In that case, I'll do a run on the local running trail (so no cars to worry about) and use my iPod.

If I do run with music, my tastes are really eclectic. Depends entirely on my mood. Could be Fallout Boy, could be Mozart.

Kick @$$ songs:
Dragonforce - My Heart Will Go On, Through the Fire and Flames
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
ACDC - Highway to Hell
Ozzy - Over the Mountain, Bark at the Moon

I can run without music, but it helps me focus sometimes. I used to have to use all kinds of Jedi mind tricks to focus when I started (even with the tunes) but now its just better than listening to traffic or the crap the gym is playing.

Again I'm going to have to second Ironmom :) Now if only I could swim like her!!

But I use the music as a bonus of motivation on days when listening seems to make running sound better. I haven't used it in a while though. And I almost never know the name of who I'm listening to! That's what I get for using a shuffle and sharing a computer to load the songs :)

Music on a rainy day- helps block out the rain and fear of bears on my early mornings.
Sunny day- no music, just try to soak up as much vitamin D as you can in the northwest.

In the player now: Toby Mac, Burlap to Cashmere, Skillet

Yes, except when it’s raining. I love running in the rain without music especially on my long runs.

Currently I’ve been listening to some ACDC, Rage Against The Machine, Outkast, Korn, and Linkin Park to get me fired-up and towards the end of my run a little Led Zeppelin. And lately for some reason the last song to help me get to the end of my run is Kashmir.

I listen to music and I listen to books when I run. Especially on the treadmill. Even not on the treadmill, I'm running mostly suburb here, so it isn't exactly like I'm missing much nor is it too dangerous because there is a huge bike lane and sidewalk when the road is tilted too much.

I do not listen on the bike, unless I'm on a stationary in the gym. That takes more concentration, plus I do get to get out to the places with the view.

sometimes doing a long run, i like music because it can help me separate myself from what im doing. sometimes when preparing for a race you dont run just for the joy of running and it can be a tool i think.
sometimes the joy of running comes from how you feel after the run, or even weeks after the run after you did well in a race.
that being said i like "the weepies", its easy and helps keep my adrenaline down so i can increase my distance.

I love listening to music when I am at the gym... but I just can't find headphones that I like. The ones that are comfortable sound like crap. Then there are the ones that transfer sweat from my hair, directly into my ear. Then there are my really expensive ones that seal so tight that I can hear my feet hitting the treadmill...

Basically, I just gave up. It is hard to run on the treadmill without some kind of distraction, so I am thinking of starting the headphone search again especially now that it is getting to be "winter". If you can call what we have in California "winter."

Kashmir is on pretty much every playlist I have - grew up with it as teenager and still love it. A little trivia - Robert Plant was being interviewed down here and was asked the question " what's it like to have written the greatest rock song of all time?" to which Plant replied "Oh, you mean Kashmir" before the interviewer cut him off to mention Stairway to Heaven. Clearly Robert Plant thinks highly of Kashmir as well :)

I almost always have some music playing for my runs.

For harder runs its linkin park, crystal method, iron butterfly, ac/dc, that sort of thing.

For longer more mellow runs anything from the police and hooverphonic, to the beatles and mozart. Stuff to help keep the pace and HR down.

I must say I am torn about listening to music. Before doing tris I would always listen to music when i excercised. After starting tris i thought it would be a better idea to try and focus without any music. I relized music was usually keeping my mind off of the workout rather than helping me focus on improvement.

Now, however, i just got an ipod nano (old ones are like 60 bucks on ebay now!) with nike+ ipod and I love it. It was much cheaper than the running watches I've seen (like 90-100 for the total setup) plus I can program tons of songs on it (2gb.) I will turn the sound down sometimes, or take the headphones out. Mainly I love all of the info nike+ipod gives you, like current pace, distance, total time. It even graphs and tracks your runs and progress on a website. Plus you can join challenges from other users worldwide. I love it, and now the advertisement is over.

What music? I like a lot of music without lyrics lately. I used to always listen to The Beatles or Modest Mouse...lyrically heavier bands. Nowadays I'm more into LCD Soundsystem, Ratatat, Fatboy Slim, when I run. The pace is quick and the music is not too distracting from my workout.

Have some good runs!

I used regular earphones for a while, but I hated the sweat accumulation on them right into my ear. I ended up with in-ear buds as my ears are too big and all the regular ear buds I tried fell right out.

I love almost all those songs. Just have to find someone with the CDs or a well stocked DRM-less online store. I should also try using the radio tuner on my player so I can listen to WSOU.

While biking? Never here in Jersey. Running is one thing with sidewalks and going much slower, but sharing the road with 10,000 people/sq mile in my area? Fat chance. Might be safer to walk alone through Newark at 2:AM flashing wads of cash.

It's illegal (perhaps by state? I'm not sure) if you use headphones, the same as driving with them is.

NJ Bicycling Laws don't list it explicitly. I tried looking up the automobile laws, since they also apply to bicycle use, but apparently none of the documents linked to by the official state site exist.

*edit* - it also appears that the only thing you can do on the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission's website is renew your registration. So, because the site says "MyMVC is an easy way for New Jersey residents to take care of Motor Vehicle Commission business, almost any time of the day or night, from the comfort of their homes or offices.", thats all its good for. You can't even do new registrations, or deregistrations, or just about anything else you would think they'd be involved with. *sigh* my tax dollars at work. :(
