Yeah, I think only Vineman now (there was Californiaman for a couple years but it changed to just a half). But I second that Vineman is a great course!
I know this is a lightning rod...
Is Vineman considered an "Ironman"?
Stupid question, true. Seriously, what is the difference?

It shouldn't be a lightening rod at all. Vineman is not owned or branded as an Mdot. That does not, however, make it not an Iron distance race. Branding not withstanding you still have to swim 2.4 miles, ride 112 miles and run a marathon.
There was no M-dot brand when the first guys did their crazy Iron thing in Hawaii. You do the distance, you get the title. Simple.

It is not an "Ironman" as that is a trademarked name and company logo type deal. But it is an irondistance -- meaning the same distances but the WTC (who owns Ironman) doesn't license the name to them.
I just signed up for 2008 Aug. Vineman Full - after missing out on signing up for an M-dot. Any advice about the race?
Awesome! Nothing in particular jumps to my mind as "need to know". Grab a hotel now -- there is one near the finish that worked great for me. I think it's a Holiday Inn or Comfort Suites or similar. I didn't want to have to head down to the river again after the race. But if you are making a vacation of it, the area by the river is great :)
Yes the hotels are going fast - I booked into an Inn in Guerneville near the start - (i'm doing the 70.3) - not too worried about the drive back as I'll be done midday and can sample the wineries on the way home :)
The 70.3 and the full are on different days -- while everything for lodging sells out FAST for the 70.3, it takes a lot longer for the full, which is a smaller race (although there is a women's half at the same time).
How many people typically do the Vineman Full?
198 finishers last year. But they also have a relay division and an aquabike and a women's half, so it doesn't feel lonely while you are out there. Not crowded either though. The 70.3 half and full (I've done both) had very different feels to them.
I always thought that Vineman was more crowded than that. This might be a possibility for 09.

Are there any full iron distance races is california besides Vineman?
