Bike Training -- Experience

I've been kind of curious about bike training since I'm new at this. Is it better to train solo or as part of a "group ride" bunch? With the triathlon rules about no drafting and side-by-side riding, my instinct tells me that group rides might make you develop some bad tri habits. On the other hand, group rides could help one develop their overall speed and endurance.

I got my road bike about a month ago and am slowly getting used to it and am getting faster (still not as quick as I'd like to be) -- averaging about 16mph over 15k. I've been doing solo rides but I would like to at some point get into a group ride (darn schedules) to get some experience with that.

Any thoughts?

I primarily do solo rides, but I like to mix in a fast paced ride with a friend, etc... to help both mix things up - as well as improve speed.

I find for example that sometimes I'll be out on local bike trails pushing it a little when someone (random stranger) is drafting off me. Sometimes I'll go 30+ minutes with someone a few feet off my tire, just pushing it nice and hard. A good motivator, and usually fun for both.

like you said triathlon is an individual sport. So there is a need to do some solo rides or sessions however there is great benifets to be had from small bunch training. By small i mean no more that 8 people (4 pairs). it's enough to do a good turn then roll to the back and get some recovery plus it's nice to have some one to chat to for a bit.

dont get bitter, get better
