The reoccuring theme I keep hearing anywhere I turn and talk to knowledgeable people in this sport is the below web page. Hope this helps some. For some this is an wakening, for others, let's just restate it.

http://www.tri-ecoach.com/art25.htm

Bottom line?

"An athlete's speed potential for 140.6 miles of swimming, biking, and running is proportional to their best times at shorter distances.......Speed at shorter distances has to come first, then applied to Ironman distance pacing."

Thanks BBB-
the IM time estimation formula was a new piece of information for me. I plugged in my good 2007 olympic distance race time, multiplied by 4.6 and was within a few minutes of my 2007 IM time.
The other standard of doubling you 1/2 IM time and adding an hour was not nearly as accurate as the oly time X 4.6.
Thanks

wel,, it IS only theory. The point to be made is that if we want to improve our IM times, or even the 1/2IM times we must work on being faster in the shorter distances.

Duh.

Sometimes the obvious must be stated.

btw, who is coach Steve?
His bio never mentions his surname.
Where is he from?
What does he look like?
HIs website doesn't even show us a face-pic.

Good article, and I agree with the theory. My HIM time improved this season even though I really haven't put in the endurance miles needed for that distance. But I did focus a lot more on speedwork for my sprint and Oly distance races than I ever have. I think it made a difference.

Yeah, I saw that page, a lot is there..

except, his name,
his home town or,
a reasonable sized picture,

hence my query.

Edit: P.S. Deep in the testimonials, I found Frank Tantillo says, "Thanks, Coach Pyle."
Hardly definitive, but maybe, just maybe, his name is Steve Pyle?

There's a similiar theory that says the fastest you can run a marathon is the total of a given single weeks worth of runs, where only the fastest miles are added up (totaling the fastest 26.2 miles).
