Story here: http://www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/245262

I did this race last weekend. I didn't hear a thing about this until afterwards when someone mentioned that a man was pulled from the lake and put on an ambulance. The lake, FWIW was about 68-70 degrees, clear, and relatively shallow. Air temp was somewhere under 40 degrees at the start. There were several lifeguards in the water and reasonably sized starting waves.

As the story says, the athlete was an experienced age grouper who had placed highly in his AG at several local events. Heart disease, in this case atherosclerosis, was the culprit. The swim might have just been the trigger.

For any family and friends who might read this, I'm very sorry about your loss and hope that you can find solace.

My condolences to friends and family.

This sort of thing is a lot more common at events than people realize...the announcement of it is often missed.
Two men died at last years Marine Corps... I've heard of several other local deaths this year at other events...one a local organized century...

One thing this did cement in my mind is the critical need to keep up to date on physicals, etc. Things like heart disease may never be apparent even in very fit people until it is too late.

Certainly a great loss for the family etc. I heard about this from a friend that knew him through HeadHunters tri-club. Quite a shock.

Very sad indeed, and yes a reminder that we are all vulnerable. Much like the recent story on Ironman.com about Brian Keats, one of Mike's old buddies: http://ironman.com/columns/ironmanlife/ford-ironman-world-champion-brian-keast-has-another-battle-on-his-hands-this-fall

I won't get to meet him in Kona now, but hopefully he is recovering well!

If I'm going to have a catastrophic heart failure I'd like it to be while I'm doing something I love, (or someone I love.)

At 55 and as fit as I've ever been I don't begrudge someone going out in a blaze of glory.

Fabio Casartelli, killed on the descent of the Col de Portet d'Aspet,
Dale Earnhardt, NASCAR, - crashed into the wall at 160mph
Pistol Pete Maravich, - heart failure playing BB at the YMCA
Jim Fixx, - heart failure running a marathon
Dr. Sean Egan, - cardiac failure attempting Everest in 2005,
Thomas Herrion, NFL - cardiac arrest after game vs Denver Broncos
Chuck Hughes, died of heart failure during NFL game vs Chicago Bears, 1971
Darryl Kile, MLB Cardinals, heart failure during series vs Chicago Cubs
Reggie Lewis, Boston Celtics, died - heart attack during practice scrimmage

and the best of all,

Cristiano S. de Lima Junior, a striker for Dempo Soccer Club, collided with goalkeeper Subrata Paul in the 78th minute of the Federation Cup finals while scoring his second goal staggered away, then collapsed, the autopsy revealed that Junior died of cardiac arrest.
He was dead on arrival at Hosmat Hospital. Dempo won the Cup, 2-0.
Junior had scored both of his teams' goals in winning the championship and died while scoring the second goal!

You're right, Anton, we only have this moment. Dum vivimus vivamus.

Reminds me of what happened to Alberto Salazar. Champion Marathoner, and has a heart attack before 40. The genetic risk for heart disease, and other medical conditions is REAL....

Luckily most of us are doing everything that we can to stay healthy and fit, but unfortunately we are just human beings with problems that are often beyond our control.
