Seems to me that full Marathons, IM, and other endurance events are becoming more popular, so I wonder what will be next? Sounds nuts, but so did Ironman not too long ago.

How about - Super Ironman 4mi Swim, 200mi Bike, 50mi Run, who's in?

Talk to Anton. He has something nutty! 2x IM 3xIM. Crazy!

Just do a Double IM. 4.8/224/52. Look here:
usaultratri.com
links there to other Ultra-distance IM's including a Deca (yes, that's 10 IM's in 10 days...

There are even deca-iron events. But the one I saw uses a pool and a small loop on the bike and run and I might go loopy with that ;)

For safety it has to be on short loops...I'm am sure things go drasticly wrong on day 7 or 8...for an event like that, there has to be a safety net...

True... but I think I'd rather it was an assigned car per athlete (say a friend or family member) that keeps an eye out every 5 miles on the bike, and a biker that stays with them on the run.

But the good thing is the safety net keeps me from being interested. Although my solution above has me tempted to try (well, the run part) on my own ;)

Okay, how's this?

The North American Truly International Triathlon

Start in Havana.

Swim to Miami - 90 miles (mind the currents)
Bike to Seattle - 3273 miles
Run to Vancouver - 120 miles

Combines the Cuba - USA rough water swim (remember Diana Naiad?)
the RAAM, and
a lovely sea-level, no elevation gain, marathon, - finishing in one of the world's Top Ten Most Beautiful Cities.

POC, I like it. and you have to qualify by doing all the IMs in one year.

Isn't there a Trans-Canada run? But we USA types are out...it's illegal for us to go to Cuba (nudge, nudge, wink, wink.)

Terry Fox is the exact inspiration you need for something like a transcontinental triathlon. I remember first reading about him when Dean Karnazes was receiving all the hype for doing 50 marathons in 50 days in 50 states (also, at the same time another kid was doing the 50/50/50 and started before Dean, just never received the same publicity). Anyway, Dean is a monster for sure and a great talent despite the people who try to tear him down. Yet the story of Terry Fox trumps pretty much everything I have ever heard about bravery in the face of hardship (at least as it relates to ultra endurance events).

Alright, I just mapped out the best US ultra tri I could come up with.

IronmanX50
Swim: Montauk Long Island to Staten Island. 120 miles
Bike: New York-Cleveland-Chicago-Omaha-Denver-Salt Lake City-Portland-San Francisco-LA-Phoenix-Dallas-Houston. 5600 miles
Run: Houston-New Orleans-Tampa-Miami. 1310 miles

The distances all worked out very closely according to google maps. I need to pick a really rare and tough element for the name though. Perhaps Cesium Man

Concocting distances in various combinations is endlessly amusing, but to have significance some history needs to be involved.

The distances in Ironman were arrived at by John Collins, famouslly, as the Waikiki Rough Water Swim - 2.4 miles from the Aloha Tower in Honolulu to Waikiki, PLUS
the Round Island Bike Race - 112 miles, PLUS
the Honolulu Marathon - 26 miles.

So we need some anchors - RAAM comes to mind.
I thought making it a 3-country event would add significance.

So how about starting in Toronto
Swimming across Lake Ontario to NY state, say, NIagra-on-the-lake,
(a 52-kilometre journey. The current record is 15 hours and 10 minutes, set by Cindy Nicholas in 1977.)

Biking to California a la RAAM

to run the Western States 100-mile Race?
(The Run is conducted along the Western States Trail starting at Squaw Valley, California, and ending in Auburn, California, a total of 100 miles. )

thus combining three historic swim, bike and run events.

ut things have to flow and then you have to consider transition times...
Lap swim around Catalina Island ending on the Mainland.
Start the RAAM course where you come onto dry land.
Finish RAAM at Springer Mountian Ga...Run the Appalacian Trail to Maine a'la David Horton et all who've run the 2,100 miles in 52 or so days.

What about running the great divide? Or maybe we could make it the ultimate XTERRA?

So the way I figure it (no exact distances here.)

Swim Across lake ontario- RAAM, then complete the section of the run Terry fox was intending to complete but then couldn't. (Vancouver to Thunder Bay) where he stopped.

Or internationally (this is a good one!)

Swim the English Channel, Ride the Tour de France, then run from PAris to Rome!

He He. This is too much fun!

Instead of seeking longer distances people could always try going faster in the "shorter" ones. Yes I know that is a crazy idea! :)

No, it's not crazy. In fact going fast promotes different adaptations in our bodies to make us faster for longer endurance events.
