Picking A Fall Marathon
not to muddy up the waters any but how about steamtown in scranton pa. heard it's a good small town race with a net negative elevation loss.
also heard good stuff about Baltimore mary. steer clear of the Atlantic City marathon heard that one has really fallne apart.

What JRH heard is correct. Steamtown is a great race. Small, well-organized, friendly, and fast. I've done it twice and loved it both times. Being in the Mountains it is usually nice and cool for race day even though it is the first Sunday in Oct.
Baltimore is also a nice race, but quite a bit farther from Boston than Scranton. It also is a bit more demanding of a course.
I am signed up to do one in RI Saturday October 20th

Oh, boy. Scranton. I was born there. The last time we visited, I thanked my mom for moving away when I was young.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Hi All!
I'm certainly going to check this thread regularly. Thanks for all the ideas already!
I'm not sure how soon I'll be running again, as the crash took alot out of me, but I've gotten back on the bike to keep my fitness up!
All that is left to heal is a sore adductor and tight ITB (near TFL AND lateral epicondyle!)

It may be a bit more then 4 hours away but there is a full in PEI Canada that is a point to point run like Boston and is supposed to be pretty fast. My girlfriend is running it and we were over checking out the course and a bunch of it is on trails which is nice.
if you're doing ti let me know, I can cheer you on

Niagara falls International Marathon... great course.
Baltimore is a little hilly...
Steamtown has a net elevation drop...but it still has hills.
marathonguide.com is a great resourse as Beads said and good info at runnersworld.com but you know that!

oh no! I signed up for the AC marathon...go figure! Why such the negative thoughts about it? Hopefully nothing that will make my experience too crappy?
As said above, Baltimore is a little hilly, but it's a really fun race. If you want to do Marine Corps, I know I've seen people selling their bib #s on the DC craigslist site (I think in the tickets section?). Richmond is another flat one, if you want to travel another 1.5 hours (without traffic) south of DC.
Another option:
the Northern Central Trail Marathon north of Baltimore

It's on a packed gravel trail and is a Boston Qualifier - I'm thinking of doing it depending on my recovery from IM FL......

I totally forgot about the NCR...thanks JM.
To dispel a myth however... ANY marathon that is certified by RRCA,USATF, etc...is a Boston qualifier...Many races say "Boston Qualifier" as a way to get more attendees..
But I'm sure ya'all knew that.

hmm that's really a shame.. well hopefully they saw all those opinions and got their act together. the race this year is on october 14th. i'm keeping my fingers crossed (:
Although Cape Cod is a beautiful course, and some people have PR'd there, I think it is pretty tough. I run the course for my long runs all summer and there are significant hills from miles 12 to 21.
I ran Baystate last year and it is as advertised a flat, fairly monotonous course but one which is more likely to get you a fast time.
My PR is at BayState (2005). It is monotonous, and there is no crowd. But it is fast, and I could have been even faster if it wasn't for those blasted winds!

I liked that race a lot - it was flat and fast even during a nor'easter and AC can be a cool place to hang out in. please report back on it

will definitely report back, hopefully with good news (:

In the middle of the summer, I considered doing Philadelphia for a fall marathon. But then my training buddies opted for an Ultra in September, leaving me no place to stay down in PA.
I know Marine Corps is sold out and certainly unavailable. So I am beginning to brainstorm fast course marathons that are within about 4 hours driving distance of Boston.
Right now, I'm looking at:
Baltimore
Bay State
Cape Cod
Maine
Manchester (I trained on this course for 3 years in undergrad)
I did my first 20 miler two weeks ago, and have been running between 45-65 mpw, losing some mileage to a Oly distance Tri last Sunday wherein I crashed, and am just starting to train again.
I was hoping on getting in three 20 milers before the race, but I can probably only fit one more 20 in between now and the race.
Thanks for any advice and or races you guys may have!
Best,
A.Low
