my race comes up oct. 6 (my first).
i woke up a week ago with a low back problem.
a physical therapist friend gave me a program to work through and i am now almost pain free. the thing is i was told not to run until its gone completely. i was only able to run twice in gearing up for this and im running desperately out of time!
anyone here have experience with low back? it doesnt bother me to cycle and swim. im thinking of doing a brick tommorrow- short one my run after a 20 mile bike and see how it feels the following morning.
any thoughts?

What type of a back injury is it?

Go with the bike and gingerly start the run...if it starts to act up...stop! You have three weeks till your first race and really the goal now is to get there as healthy as possible. Missing a few workouts now in order to protect yourself won't have that much of an impact.

i'm not sure of the cause of the injury, the physical therapist i am working with thinks there is inflammation around the disc.
the problem with treating it "gingerly" is that after a 20 mile ride and then running, my body will be warm, and in my experience(unless its a critical injury) won't be felt until i cool down, or even the next day.
when it first happened i woke up and was not able to stand completely straight until mid day. now it is just occasionally stiff.

If you're truly worried about run fitness, but it's still twinging a little, I'd recommend pool running or the elliptical without using the hand bars. Both are much lower impact and will help you keep your fitness up without possibly causing an aggravation of the injury before your race.

I'm always fascinated by these threads. I'm second Riverbrady's recomendation about elliptical work. This most closely emulates running, and maintains leg strength.

The "morning-after" test works best in my opinion. I am currently doing the same for an adductor problem after a crash. I recently returned to cycling lightly, and am going day-by-day.

I'm an advocate of the pool running. No impact and it's been proven to maintain run fitness through injuries..

i am completely new to aquatics and have no idea about pool running.does anyone have a description of this or a link?
thanks for all the help btw.
yesterday my back felt great... chose probably wisely, not to run after the bike. it feels even better today. my son and i went to our race site for a little "recon" work. we rode the bike course. i was excited to see a couple finishing what we were about to start. after our ride, there was another competitor doing some swim recon.

one thing about the running... cardio-wise i am good to go, after a few runs, before the injury, i realized that my musculature was not used to the impact, especially the soleus muscles below the calf. obviously (i think) pool work wont help with this. i suppose i could do some form of calf raise???
