I am considering doing one next year and had a few questions.

1) What is the capacity of the races, I am sure each one is different, but ballpark how many racers per race?
2) Are they mass swim starts like IM races, or are they wave start, or does it depend on the race?
3) Are they worth the extra money to do one rather than a well run local race?

(1) I think it's about 2000-2500 like the IMs.
(2) Depends on the race, but I believe most of the ones I've seen have been waves.
(3) They are very well done, they can have great spirit with the big crowds (racing and cheering). Just depends what you want in your day.

My experience with "official" 70.3 has been awesome. Contrary to IM, there are wave starts. I would recommend them because there are more people and they are always well orchestrated

Thanks for the advice. I think I am going to do one next year, but just wanted to make sure it was worth the extra money.

Many of them are established races that Ironman has partnered with for 70.3. Those in your area that are good would be Vineman and Lake Stevens.

It all depends on what race you are signing up for. I did lake stevens 70.3 and there is 1400 people and it was a wave start which was really nice.

I was considering doing the new race in Boise next year. I have alot of friends that live over there. Is there any difference in doing one that is in its first year with M dot. I wouldn't think there would be, but I was just curious.

The ones I've attended had pretty different feels to them. The same standard of quality and support, but just different attitudes. From what I gather much of that comes from the races as they were before they joined the 70.3 circuit since many of the 70.3 series is from partnering and Tribro mentioned above. So I'm not sure what feel a new race would have... however, unlike some first year races, you can be pretty sure it will have good support and planning.

Wow! Great thread topic. I am intending on doing a 70.3 next August, (Timberman) and was hoping to obtain some information relative to what the conditions are like.

Thanks for all the ideas!
