I'm heading into my last tri of the season this weekend. :(

After a short break, I'm planning to dive into training for the Goofy Challenge. My race goal is strictly to finish, running all of it except the aid stations. The main reason I'm doing this is to maintain motivation for good fall run training.

My question is this: what, if anything, have people done differently from a standard marathon training plan to train for Goofy?

I'm looking at the Hal Higdon Intermediate 1 plan, which already has moderate running the day before the Sunday long run. Has anyone experimented with upping the mileage of this Saturday run to 1/2 of the long run say every 2nd or 3rd week? Does that even sound like a good idea?

All thoughts appreciated.

Hey PJT..this will be my third Goofy...
I'm usually coming off a 50 miler when Goofy comes around...Have lots of stamina, but not much speed.
A standard Mary program will work well for Goofy. The back to backs I think are important. I experimented with doing back to back stuff with a day off in between this year (a la "Going Long") and didn't like the result so I'm back to back to backs...
I use them in standard Mary training and for Ultras too...I'd make sure you get at least one weekend just like race weekend
...Up at three, start your run in the dark...a half on Saturday and a standard long run on Sunday....I have substituted a long bike ride for the shorter of the two runs too...that seems to work good for me. Many ultra runners use a standard 10 miler as a second run some,13. This weekend I'm doing a long run on Saturday (18-20 or maybe a longish bike) and a half Sunday as a catered training run.
Goofy is the most fun I've ever had at a race weekend...we'll have to meet up!
Oh...if you haven't signed up for hte vip tent...consider it...beats sitting around on the pavement for two hours.

I think there will most definitely be a trifuel gathering. Look for posts by either myself or brittda as the race day(s) get closer.

Those training ideas sound good, except for the getting up at 3 part. I'm be coming in from a different time zone so I think I'll shoot to get up at 4 instead. :D

I'll look into the VIP tent thing.

I ran Goofy with Beads1985 the last two years, but he won't be coming...Kona was there, but don't know about this year..met brittda...we all ended up i the same corral...I'm hoping the temps will be cooler like two years ago...all the better for the kilts!

I am not doing Goofy this winter (I just did a self-supported IM this past Saturday, though). I didn't do any back-to-backs--I just kept up my 2:00-2:30 long runs every week, a tempo run in the middle of the week and 3 other runs (1 being a brick just cuz), for 5-6 hours of running per week.

You do want to try and run the half VERY easy, even slower than your long run pace, if you can, and then lay around the rest of the day and eat properly to be ready for the marathon.

Have you done an IM? If so, starting the marathon, your legs feel almost like they do when you start the IM marathon.

Goofy isn't as hard as it's cracked up to be if you have your head together. It's mostly mental. But I think it helps to wear a costume and keep it fun!

Thanks Kona & Anton,

Obviously some different viewpoints here. I think the takeaway message is that any good marathon plan that involves a decent amount of consistent running with the obligatory weekly long and tempo efforts should get me to the finish line.
I will probably experiment with some back-to-backs, just for confidence building. I have done an IM before so I know what the wobbly leg marathon feels like-should be fun.
