Fractured Fibular Sesamoid - in my foot.
Hi Flash,
I've recentley recovered from a stress fracture to the 2nd Met in my foot. I ended up having no running for 12 weeks, and no cycling for 6 and am finally fully recovered and up to doing a 15km run this weekend.
I'd get a second opinion if I was you! Running on it will probably make things worse.
Ah, the wonders of the internet, definitely a good resource for double checking doctors.
I would definitely get a second opinion. I usually get a second opinion on anything that seems like a serious issue (which this is). If nothing else, it will make you feel more comfortable with your diagnosis (or make you never want to go to that first podiatrist again!)

Thanks for the input guys.
Just got back from the "2nd Opinion" doctor and he was adamant: "Absolutely no running or biking for atleast 4 weeks"
Swimming is okay. And no cast is necessary as there appears to be some healing going on. So, I had to cancel my last 2 triathlons.
Not very happy at this point.
Yeah, that's gonna be tough! Just keep reminding yourself that the time off now and proper healing is what will allow there to be a next time! And one where it doesn't hurt so badly.

:( I was just about to say this is a great time for a stress fracture since its the off season and taking a few weeks off is no biggie. That sucks about missing your last two races.
It's definitely better to rest though. I also had a stress fracture in my second metatarsal but I ran on it for a long time before I knew. It never really hurt that badly, so I figured it was just so nagging ache and I wanted to keep running because it was my first season of college track. I had gone to see a trainer a few times but she never thought it was a fracture.
After about 2 months of nagging pain I went to a doctor and asked for an xray. First he just examined it and watched my reactions to pressure he put on it and also deemed that it probably wasn't a fracture. But he xray-ed it anyway and it was indeed fractured and had been trying to heel the whole time I was running on it. I ended up taking off for about 12 weeks total, got extremely out of shape and was cut from the team after coming back because I couldn't do anything spectacular.
The moral is getting early treatment and resting when injured is very important. Trying to train through will almost always worsen the injury and force you to take off even more time in the end.

Hmmm... Sounds familiar.
I just had my xray taken today for a possible stress fracture (4th metatarsal on right foot). I ran the Mt Desert Island marathon with some serious pain.
I think it's always best to take a good rest period and kick butt the next season. Happy Healing!!
I fractured one of my sesamoid's when I was 14 or so and finally had the darn thing removed when I was 17 or 18. I tried casting it and also was in a walking boot for quite a long time. For me removing it was just the best thing after trying multiple things to get it better. Good luck with yours! Most dr's that treated me didn't want to move it and actually just said to run and play through the pain, only after 3 years did they even consider surgery an option. Also, I've known quite a few people that were serious runners who ran with their broken for quite a few years with no problems, one guy I think said his had been broken for 12 years and he just kept running. But if you can give it that down time for a few weeks that's the best thing.

Pretty much what my Dr. said, that it's healing a bit, but may never heal completely. If it doesn't and I get pain, then he'll look into taking it out. But for now I'm running, easing into it. If there is no pain, there is nothing more to do, but if I get serious pain again, he'll most likely take it out.
He did say that a lot of people live with it like this, they just aren't very physical people.
We'll see.
Good luck to you! Just give it the time to heal now and don't push it and hopefully it will all turn out fine. If not then just bite the bullet and tell him to yank the little sucker out. :p
Oh yeah, and I did realize after mine was taken out that my balance wasn't the best. Now being 9 months pregnant and even more out of balance that I normally can sometimes make for a fun show for my husband when I'm trying to put my shoes on!
Don't ask my why those little bones affect your balance, but they do.

I've had some foot pain lately and it's been killing me. Really sapping my motivation to run. Well it two weeks to get into a podiatrist. They took xrays and yeap, I have a fractured fibular sesamoid, in my left foot.
They gave me some shoe inserts and basically told me that I didn't have to change my routine. Then I get home tonight and do 2 hours of internet reading and 99% of the treatments that I read say 6-8 week so NO pressure on that foot, i.e. Cast.
What should I make of this. I'm calling this guy tomorrow but I really don't want to have surgery if I don't need to. Crap.
I'll happily give up running & biking for 6-8 week if I need to. But if the Dr. says "keep doing what you are doing...you'll be fine...if it doesn't get better we'll remove it." UM YEAH. But what about the "don't move it for 6-8 weeks.
Crap.
Anyone have any input or experience? It would be very much appreciated. Truly.
