My puppy makes me feel like a slacker

prior to getting my puppy I was training 6-7 days a week w/ 1 to 3 hour sessions. Now, I just don't feel like training b/c I'd rather stay home to be w/ her. Also when I do, I feel bad if b/c usually I train before I go to work, so if I start around 8 or 9am and then have to be at work at 11am, she'll be in her crate until 7:30pm. That means she'll be in her crate all day. I just can't wait until she's house broken and when I could trust her out of the crate w/ no one around. But I know that won't be for quite awhile.

Also, when I know that I have to ride, run, or swim on a particular day, I find myself making excuses not to go.

Trust me - We have 3 dogs and now that they're all getting older and can't run with me any more, I can completely relate. I've skipped more than a few workouts because I've felt guilty that they've been alone all day.

Best solution I've found is to build in a walk with her as your warm up and/or cool down. That way she gets some fresh air and bonding with you, and also will be more tired and sleep better during the day.

Same thing with some fun in the evening - play fetch in the yard, visit a dog park or just take another easy walk. Get the energy out. Finally, if possible, let her sleep in your room (in the crate if necessary). Hearing you breath or eventually sleeping on the bed with you as one of my spoiled dogs does, counts as bonding/together time too.

Good luck!

You could try walking the puppy to get in some extra exercise. Try to walk as fast as the puppy can. Other than that, it's just a matter of time until the puppy is housebroken. Good luck!

This post is useless witout puppy pics!

I run with my border collie 3 days a week. I have to- she goes bonkers if we dont! But make sure you wait till the dog is older enough before running with it. Same as people, you cant work em too hard when theyre young.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I've had dogs...dogs are good. Dogs are work...Cats not so much.
As much as my cats sleep, just getting up and having tea makes me feel like I really accomplished somthing!

I hear ya wrt the cat there Anton! Mine is the same way! Dogs are great and I used to take mine running with me, but as she has gotten older and my distances have gotten further I have to leave her home. It is tough though because she knows when the Under Armour comes out that she should be going on a walk. I sometimes change into my workout clothes in the garage just so she doesn't see me, but the look on her face when I come in dripping with sweat breaks my heart! :(

I do make time for here at least three times a week for a walk.

One of my dogs gets pooped after 2 miles or so. He recognizes my workout gear and hides whenever I'm changing.

The other is a new addition to the house and is still learning leash etiquette. I'm sure he'll be a great running dog eventually, but right now he pulls a bit too much.

our "kids" (beagles) are both older now (12 and 13) so no running. I have to make time to take them for walks so they get "their" time. The rest of the day they sleep so all is good. I used to feel guilty even about going to work, so when Daisy was 6 we adopted Franklin for her. Having the second dog helps a lot, they keep eachother company and 2 is really no more work.

I don't feel too bad about leaving my dog behind, he's not too active, plus I work from home, so he has lots of time with me during the day.
As for the cat, she misses me, but as long as the dog is there, she doesn't get too bored.

Oh, this makes me miss last fall when my dog could run still! He blew both is ACL's and now I have to sneak out the door. He goes nuts when I lace my shoes or say I am leaving for a r-u-n. He had the surgery and is healing up but he is only up to a 5 block walk now. I really miss that tug on the leash when I was starting to slow down. My favorite part is that final sprint to the door....does this sound pathetic like I can't get anyone to run with me that can talk back.....starting to worry....:)

So many cute dogs! I don't think I'd be able to leave Lola alone all day - no wonder you have problems training when you get home - she's so cute and small!! You should get one of these:

Tamara - that picture of Joe is great! I love the hat!

The first pic is a pic of our dog that left us in July. We only had him 4.5 months and he was a great runner - came with me on 10 mile runs. We think he died of stomach torsion issues. His name was Basso.

The second pic is our new dog that we got 2 days after Basso died. His name is Coffee. We haven't run too much with him b/c the heat has been unbearable for me to run in, let alone a dog with a thick fur coat! He's a great dog too and we were happy to be able to rescue 2 dogs, even if it meant the passing away of the first one.

Dog pics! Great!
We just need more pics of the dogs next to the bikes - then best of both worlds! :D
