Training After A Bike Crash

So since my bike crash Sunday, I’ve become a total slacker, as I can’t really walk that well yet because of the bruised areas, and the who-knows-what on my right adductor and abductors, as well as the nasty road rash all over my back, which prohibits me from getting the wounds anywhere near water.

So I estimate I’ll give myself this week to heal on the basal level. I’ve been OD’ing on Vitamin C and protein, and being very careful about my caloric intake (FITDAY.COM)

I want to know what is the safest bet in terms of coming back, safely.. Should I start on the bike, the run, the elliptical, the pool?

All I can do now is core work, which I know is adding a lot of useless muscle, as my tri –season is essentially over, as I switch gears for the Philadelphia Marathon in late November.

How careful should I be in coming back, and when would be a good time to evaluate how far I’ve healed?

Thanks!

First off, core work is not useless muscles! When you are aero, you are using your core to hold the position... when you run, you use your core. Nothing useless about that work :)

Wait for the skin to be pretty healed before you get in the pool -- chlorine is BAD for new and rebuilding skin, and most public pools don't want open wounds in them anyways. Once you are mostly healed up, look into the waterproof bandage covers for the worst spots that are less healed.

Biking can be a good way to get back out and get some movement in without pounding on your bruised areas (included any internal bruising stuff), but will depend on what really hurts you.

The best thing to do will be to listen to your body. Try a ride, try a run. And I mean go around the block. See how you feel after it (not just during) to see really how the experience was for your body. And then listen to it... your body will be your best guide for this.

I would stay away from a pool until most of the open wounds are healed, if not wait till they are fully healed. I would start off coming back with low impact workouts, and elliptical or a stationary bike is going to be the best and easiest thing to do. Also, you are able to stop instantly if any unexpected pain develops from your injuries, unlike a run when you can be miles away from home when a weird pain develops. Take it slow and wait till you feel that your body is mostly, if not fully healed before trying to do anything that is to taxing on your body.

Hey guys:

Thanks so much for these pointers. I've never taken a beating like this from a race before, so it helps to have some folks give some directions!

Thanks again!
