Hey All-
I was cleaning my drivetrain today and when I went to re-install my rear wheel, something went wrong. The rear derailleur is off, I think. I can't shift into the biggest cog on back. When I shift the rear derailleur all the way to the left it end up in the third-largest cog. I don't really know what to do, I'm a new biker and I've never had this problem before when I replaced my rear wheel. Any ideas?

1. Shift into your smallest rear cog, take off the wheel and then re-mount it. Make sure you can get it to spin freely. Re-check the shifting.

2. If it's still bad, it could be a couple of things. The limit screw may need to be adjusted on the rear der. (go to the Park tools website to learn how to do this --it's very easy). You could have a bent derailleur hanger. That would mean a trip to the bike shop. Or it could be that your rear derailleur cable is really out of adjustment (again, check the Park Tools site). I'm not sure why any of these problems would have cropped up from a simple cleaning.

I shifted into my smallest rear cog, and took off and re-mounted the rear wheel. The chain rubbed the front derailleur and I still could only shift onto the third largest cog, and at that point the rear derailleur wouldn't shift any more, like it was on the largest cog. Any other ideas?

Chain will rub the FD if you're in the small ring up front--I suggested trying that so that you could make sure that the derailleur had the chain sitting on the proper cog before trying to shift up.

Time to check the limit screw, derailleur hanger and cable tension.

Make sure your cable is still in all the stops on the frame. It may have come out and the cable slack is causing the issue.

I have a better idea. Take your bike into the woods and leave it. Then go to the store and buy a new fancy italian model.:)

Sorry. I have been in this situation many times where something doesn't seem to be going right, and I have no idea what is wrong. It always end up being something little and silly, eg not putting the wheel in totaly straight. The parktool site has been very helpful for m as well.

Ok, I think the problem is with the cable. It seems extremely slack. I guess I will try to figure out how to fix it later, I'll check the PT site. Thanks JamieM and PJT!
