I have been running on and off for about 4 years. As I started doing triathlons this summer, I have also started running more. My longest run so far has been 5 miles. I want to keep my motivation in the fall and want a big event to look forward to. I was thinking about a half marathon this fall (oct 21) I have been following a Hal Higdon schedule I have found on line. If I add about a mile a weed to my long runs, will I be ready for the half marathon?

No doubt about it! You could easily be ready for the 1/2 marathon by October! And looking at your location on your profile - I could be doing the same race that I think you are doing Oct 21 - :)

You can definately be ready. A lot of the beginner half marathon plans stop at 10 miles for a long run (these plans are basically for just completing the half, not setting a time goal etc). I've done one after three weeks off due to an injury... although I had a good base prior.

Good luck!

a lot depends on you as an individual, but the two times i ran a half marathon, i never ran more than 8 miles in training for it. I heard that you could do that and it worked for me. It might be that there is so much going on and its so fun you dont even notice and addrenaline carries you.

You really think so? I'm high school age and thought long distance running would be bad for me, but i see in race results that many people my age run those things, including marathons. I don't want to run a marathon (yet!) but am stii woundering if the half marathon is a bad idea. I love triathlons and the new sport I am doing- just want to be cautious.

Don't increase your miles every week. Increase for 3 weeks, then scale back your miledge a lot on the forth.
There are also rules for how much you can increase your long runs, and how often, but I don't know them off the top.

Good luck.

You'll never make it smoking an extra "mile a weed". Too tough on the lungs.:D Just kidding. Couldn't resist. If it's your first 1/2 and you just want to complete it, just continue to follow the program and have a nice easy run on race day. Good luck and keep us posted.

Take you time and enjoy it. Take from a chronic IT Band pain sufferer: stretch, easy run, ice/stretch again. Don't get in a hurry. There are plenty of other races around.

Amyro, I responded to your question in my thread about the Columbus marathon, but it probably got lost in the shuffle. Here is what I replied there:

I would say, go for it. Sure. You've got the speed, you've got the base, it sounds like you have the legs.

I did my first one on a lot less preparation than you have. I didn't too well, but finishing was still one of the best moments of my life. And, most importantly, it gave me the confidence to know that I can do it, and with proper training do pretty well.

Subsequently, I trained harder and smarter the next year and took 43 minutes off my previous time.

Speed hurts; how fast do you want to go?

Thanks for the advice. I will defenatly take it easy and make sure to stretch! The 1/2 marathon I am planning on running is the Colombus Marathon. I guess I will follow the training plan and see how I feel.I might even make it there!
