basic newb question 1
This usually sparks some debate...
If you go sockless - BE SURE to have tried it in several training sessions for both the bike and the run.
I've gone sockless up to and including HIM.
For the IM - NO - I'll wear socks on the bike - a new pair for the run - and a spare pair in the special needs run bag (just in case).

I usually go sockless, especially at shorter races. After the swim I'm a little lightheaded and I just don't have the balance to put socks on.
But like RV said, definitely try it in practice.
I have always worn socks, and have done it enough where it doesn't take too much time. The extra 10 seconds it takes isn't that big of a deal for me and narrow boney feet that can be blister-prone. Though I think next year I will try going socksless in a shorter race to see how I do.

Do you dry your feet first or just drag them onto wet feet?

I'll start with the obligatory "gotta see what works for you in practice first". With that out of the way... My most recent races were a half IM and an IM. I didn't wear socks on the bike for either and pulled them on for the run at both. I find that biking barefoot feels about the same as with socks (and with less funky tan lines :D) and on the bike your feet get to dry from the swim. Little bits of sand that were stuck on your foot also all just fall away. When I get off the bike, my feet are dry (well, drier) and cleaner and the socks go on easier. And for a half IM or an IM, I like socks on the run (at least til I try it in practice!).

I train mostly with socks on the bike, but I have ridden without for 30 miles and not had a problem. I mostly wear them to cut down on shoe stink... I can't imagine running without socks for any distance. I just don't think that the 10 seconds is going to make or break it...
While no single 10 second thing will usually make or break the race, keep in mind how many of them you do :) Socks, not peeing on the bike, not peeing while you run, stopping to adjust bottles after the aid station, etc. These are basically free time, so find out how many of them you personally need to do to allow you to finish the race meeting your goals, whether it is Kona or cutoff times or a PR. These things can help (you can't make it if you can't run from blisters!) but they do also have a small time penalty.
And with that in mind, at IM KY this year in M35-39 1st place was only 26 seconds faster than 3rd (a bit different than most IMs in that they couldn't see eachother due to the time trial start). And in M25-29 the difference between podium with 3rd and 4th place was 3 seconds -- although awards went to the top 5, so maybe instead I should mention that 6th place was 27 seconds behind 5th.
So minimize the amount of free time you give away! :)

I just wipe the bottoms of my feet on my towel while I put on my helmet and glasses. I do carefully select the socks I wear --thin and lightweight that stretch easily over my feet, yet still keep their form w/o wrinkles. I haven't yet mastered the keeping the shoes on the bike thing, so I wear my mt. bike shoes so I can run into and out of transition.

I wear socks only for the run. I've tried running w/o in practice before and ended up with nice big blisters in my arches. It probably would be quicker to go without but I would recommend conditioning your feet before doing so.
I'm gonna go with Kylie on this one. I go sockless for the bike, then throw socks on for the run. I find the bike is most comfortable sans socks, and the run best with them.

hey guys and gals,
Do you folks wear socks for the bike and run?
Is it too time consuming in the transition, too uncomfortable, depend on the distance? Not sure what I should be doing.
