triathlon training during ramadan

hi everyone. i have been reading these forums for a few months now, really great stuff here, but this is the first time i've registered and posted.

the holy month of ramadan is coming up which requires one to fast from sunrise to sunset (complete fast, no water, no food). i was wondering if anyone out there has trained during ramadan? what were your meals, workouts, races like?

i think i may wake up, eat and workout before sunrise, then workout right after i break my fast at sunset, does this make sense?

I can see this happening for the first week to week and a half. But after that, I think the fasting is really going to wear you out. At least this is my experience from my friends who observe Ramadan. Not sure what part of the world your from, but it's a long fasting day here in the states.

That's a tough one, but I applaud your priorities. You've still got about a week, right? I'd hit the training pretty hard this week and then cut back during observance.

If you are going to cut into sleep time to train (everybody does occasionally), will you be able to compensate with a day time nap?

Sure it's not ideal training, but look on the bright side: in about 18-20 years Ramadan will be during the offseason anyways! :D

Thanks for the advice, I think I will just train hard through the 13th of September (the first day) and then take it easy after that. My last race of the season is on the 22nd, so I just have to tough it out from the 13-22nd. However, this could be a more difficult task in the upcoming years as ramadan moves further and further back into the summer...

What is the distance of this race? Going without water or nutrition during a race is not just "tough", it's dangerous. Maybe for a sprint in cool weather... maybe... But for anything longer you are definitely begging for a trip to the medical tent.

It is a little longer sprint (.4mi swim, 20mi bike, 5 mi run) and the weather around here has been pretty cool as we're entering the fall.

I usually don't take in any nutrition during a sprint, and my water intake is minimal on the bike.

Since I'll be up pre-sunrise for the race, I figure I'll just eat my normal pre-race breakfast and make sure to stay hydrated.

Is this a bad bad idea?

Yeah, at that distance I'd say the water is the biggest issue. But if you can't take in water then you can't take in water.

Maybe it is irresponsible to suggest this, but what is the worst that could happen? You might have a sub-optimal performance, perhaps you get a head ache from being dehydrated, or at worst you get an IV from a medical volunteer.

Really interesting situation! At the risk of pushing the rules in an impious manner... would an IV count as breaking the spirit of the fast?

I fast occasionally during the offseason, but being a protestant Christian I can pretty much make up the rules as I wish and schedule it around my schedule. Not nearly as demanding!

I would say, if you can stand it, try to do your workouts before you eat. That way, you can have a better recovery even if your workouts are a little less intense. I know this would mean that your morning workout would have to be really early.... But at least for the evening workout it would probably be good to try to workout first then eat. That's just me though... I know that no matter how much I eat, I am always going to be hungry after a workout.

Just make sure to really watch your hydration/electrolyte levels during the times that you can consume food/liquids. The day before the race you should probably try to get some extra liquid in you before the race, since you are not going to be able to have anything after.

I agree, workout before eating if you can, this might make fitting in your workouts at a more reasonable time easier. Just time it to eat immediately after you stop or withing the first 1/2 hour. I don't eat before training in the mornings even if its a long ride. I keep bringing up breakfast if I do, I wonder if it helps with using body fats too. I think I read an article on Ecaps about this.
