How are IM transitions different?
Doing my first IM this year in FL. How are transitions different from shorter races? Can you/should you leave your bike shoes clipped to the bike in T1? What about leaving them clipped in at T2?I've heard horror stories about not getting back anything from your transition bags (like helmet, shoes, wetsuit, etc.). Any truth to this?
And... Will someone hand me my bags or do I need to retrieve it from a pile?
Thanks for the help!
At IMWI - Shoes are not allowed to be clipped to the bike - shoes and helmet are in your T1 bag.
Transition bags are not hard to retrieve after the race - however - they say that the special needs bags are not returned. However, they typically put them out the morning after the race and you can hunt through them to retrieve yours.
I got everything back.
The transition bags for IMWI were laid out in a room and you run by and grab yours. Someone will help you empty your bag and collect items to be put back in.
On course they will hand you your special needs bag.

I did FL last year. The same as the other Ironman events you will be givin several bags at check in. One for T1, one for T2, one for bike special needs around mile 56, one for run special needs at mile 13 and a dry clothes bag.
The only two bags that are iffy on getting back are the run and bike special needs. Everything else you pick up after you cross the finish line.
I left my shoes on the bike heading in to T2.
They will have a changing tent for you that you will use for both T1 and T2.
Hope this answers some of the questions.
I got back everthing I brought.
