Is it rubbing one of the brake pads?

Sometimes, the tire is centered but the brake is not. If that's the case, try grabbing the entire brake and rotating it so that it is centered.

It could also be that the brake pad is set too high in the brake arm and is rubbing the tire instead of the rim. You can use a hex wrench to loosen and lower the pad so it hits the braking surface instead of the tire, then re-tighten (I had to adjust my brakes this way to use Zipps).

3rd possibilty is that your wheel is way out of true.

You may also not be tightening the QR skewer properly?

You dont wanna crank it down super tight, just tight enough to leave a slight impression on your hand after you close it. Overtightening can definately cause brake rub.

could be a bunch of things. Send a pic of the skewer and the hub. That might help us out in identifying the prob. Other than that call the LBS for help and ask what they did to make it work.

A shot in the dark here - I had this problem once. It turned out the dropout had a sculpted surface so that the fork had to be perfectly engaged on the skewer before it would clamp straight. Once I understood this I could center the wheel every time.

best of luck with the race,

thanks PJT, i rotated the entire break and now it seems to spin perfectly. Is there a way to tighten the brake so it wont move at all? or is it normal for me to be able to adjust the angle of the brake at any time. I fear that it will start to rub mid ride and i will have to keep repeating this process.

I am assuming that you have standard side-pull brakes on your bike... Check to see that the center bolt is snug. It needs to be loose enough to allow the brake to compress and release freely, but if it's too loose, the brake will want to drift back and forth.

This could also be an issue with your brake springs if you have one spring on each side (I forget if side-pulls have one spring or two)... If you pop the spring out, you can bend it a little bit to add or release tension from the side that is pulling too far, or not pulling far enough....

Hope this helps.

Great luck with the race!

Theres a nut on the opposite side of the brake, usually recessed into the fork. Loosen that nut, position the brake how ya want it, keep holding in that position as you tighten that nut up again. Just twisting the brake is a good temporary fix, but loosening and retightening it last a good long while.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

TriGuy has the correct fix... he was much better at explaining it than I was.

Triguy has it right. Usually, you need to have the front wheel off to tighten that center bolt. Again, not too tight, as you want to leave just a bit of play in it.
