What an interesting ride
Wow!!
That sounds utterly intense.
These are the workouts that have a special spot carved into our permeneant memory. I have a few runs like the stress you described above. They make us believe in ourselves. Good stuff.

Did you go by any power lines, or did you look at the HR output on a graph? I find that 231 is the number mine likes to pick at certain bad interference points.

No this place is totally void of all electrical power lines, cellular and radio transmissions due to the extremely sensitive telescope equipment the government has set up on the top.
Here is a link to the data I picked up, http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3850600 it defiantly peaks out there put it seems to kinda ramp up to it so i'm still not totally sure its a error with the HRM but the other part of me thinks it has to be.

Based on how that peak looks I'd say it was interference. I'm not sure with what, but the shape of it looks exactly like sections I do with it.
Wow, that looks like an awesome ride. It appears that you hit your HR max of 231 AFTER the maximum elevation zone. Maybe you hit 231 because you were going 55 MPH! That would scare the @#$ out of me.

ok thanks, that actually is really helpful :)

Yeah there were a few sections where I would be coming around a decreasing radius turn and a huge gust of wind would hit and that defiantly got me scared!

My heart rate has done that before. It's always because my jersey is flapping in the wind at high speeds (and/or high winds) and thumps the sensor, which adds extra "beats" to the reading.

that makes sense, and I did have my jersey unzipped a ways. Thanks!

That would explain why, when i'm riding i'll look down and be feeling/breathing fine, yet my heart rate is above 200.. But it doesn't happen with running!

So this morning I hooked up with a friend's cycling team for what promised to be a brutal push to a local mountain, an ascent and then the pace line ride back. I was able to stay with the team pace line almost all the way out to the mountain, but got dropped shortly before (those guys are nuts!), then we started a beautiful 12mi climb up Kitt Peak (average % grade of like 8-10). Having done this same climb last weekend (without the long ride in) I knew it was going to be rough. By legs just weren't with me this morning I think it was the 12mi I ran yesterday and the 2 hours of sleep I got, not sure. Anyways the ride back was also really rough but I held on for dear life. The most surprising thing though was when I got home and looked at my heart rate monitor data. Heart Rate Max data: (116%, zone 8.6. 231bpm)! Yesh! Oh yeah and there was a pro triathlete on the ride, no idea how we went down that road on a TT bike.
