first time advice anyone
well i'm only a beginer as well, but maybe i can help that way.
i think as far as running goes you should start easy, like a mile as long as it takes. if thats too easy then you add a little. I dont think you will need a whole lot of Ks in training for a 3K, so you should be able to add distance slowly and at rate that wont hurt your back. The main thing i'd recommend is doing a few "bricks" with just a short run so your legs get used to the transition.
Anyways, thats by no means expert advice, but i think you will be fine.
as far as what to wear, my first triathlon i swam in tri bottoms and then put on a regular bike jersey and rode and ran in the bike jersey.
hope that helps a a little.
I've decided to try a tri. Never done multi sport before but can manage a few laps of the pool, ride a roadie semi-regularly but don't run - at all - but did play touch football and soccer until back surgery two years ago (L4-5 fusion). Surgeon recommended swimming which is how I got to where I am now. It's only a beginners/novice event; 300 metre swim, 10k bike and 3k run. Not too concerned about the swim and bike but I have no idea where to even start with any sort of run training. My back doesn't enjoy running so I want to keep it to a minimum. Can anyone throw me a bone? I've got around 6 weeks to go.
I also have no idea what to wear - the swim will likely be cold but it seems kinda strange to wear a wetsuit for 300m. Do people wear bike jerseys for the rides? Do tri-suits have any insulative properties?
so many questions, so little time, so much anxiety:) I'm breaking into a cold sweat just thinking about it.

Hey and welcome Kakman!
Take a deep breath...it will be ok.
for an absolute beginner runner..here is a great place to start
jeffgalloway.com You'll see a link at the top for training.
Programs for beginning to advance runners...the reason I recommend it is I know several folks with fused backs and the do real well on a run/walk program... My wife started running last year at the age of 53 and loves it...
What to wear...300 is short for a wetsuit...but you'll see some folks wearing them...especially the floatation impaired! My feeling is that you could go without and you'll be plenty warm in a hurry... For a sprint, many folks just swim bike and run in the same clothing...a jersey is sooo hard to get on over a wet body and sucks up time. Trisuits don't really keep you any warmer...Many folks prefer two piece in case there is a call of nature...but others swear by trisuits...I did until I broke the zipper on one about one minute befre the start of a race...
good lauck!
Any more questions ...feel free to fire away.
