Has anyone applied chamois butter before the swim (with wetsuit) and had it "stay" where the wanted to? Or am I better off buttering up in transition ?

I apply the chamois butter to the chamois before the race - then wear it for the swim - haven't had any issues with it. I've done this for long course.

I just use BodyGlide. A lot more water resistant than the Butter.

I use bag balm in the crotch area. It's cheap and stays on during the swim if you use a wetsuit.
On other areas I use BodyGlide.

I've heard of athletes using veterenary steroids but this is a first, teat cream for the crotch! WOW!

Body glide..yes. Butter...sometimes...
Bag balm...I just can't use anything that implies: "Teats on a bull !"

Seriously,
Bag Balm is a well known lubricant for the Chamois. Many pro cyclists use it. I'm surprised you guys haven't heard of it. For one thing you can buy it in the green can for about $2.99 at Wal Mart and it works better than the stuff they sell you at the bike store in the tube for 5x that price. The can will also last you the whole season depending on how much you ride ; )

^I know people that use it, too. I don't think it's weird...but maybe I'm just hardened against weird cycling stuff. Bright colored spandex will do that to you. :D

I have Bag Balm for post ride usage. It just doesnt work for me as a lube during the ride. I dont know if it is the humidity here or what.

Yep thats it. 5.89 ..... Oh well, it's still cheap. Post ride for saddle sores also is a good option.
