Are there any recommended sunglass lens colors for running or cycling? I am getting a pair of Oakleys and there are a lot of color choices.

I have heard that persimmon and rose are good for cycling.

Your input is much appreciated.

Thanks

Get some glasses with interchangeable lenses...Smith, Serfas...et al..they usually come with a dark lens, an amber a yellow or a clear...pick what you need for the weather conditions...Oakley might make some...I'm not sure. Not an Oakley fan.

I use Serfas interchangables, but if I had to pick one color, I'd pick a medium/dark gray. Red is usually for overcast and yellow for low-light, but most riding will be sunny, so the gray will get the most use.

Umm thats funny Matt, I have both grey sunglasses and some like amber ones, I use the grey ones now stricktly for driving and stuff as I can't stand them on the bike, the way the color stuff for some reason just bugs me on the bike.

Well maybe I'm just used to gray since I wear dark sunglasses everywhere I go....even inside....at night. That's how the girls at the club know you're cooler than everyone else. :D

I also have interchangeable ... I use the yellowish for dusk/dawn and the dark lenses all other times.

No one's said this, but polarized lenses are a good feature to look for. It turns your sunglasses into part of your safety gear by blocking out harmful UVA and UVB, as well as eliminating glare.
I think lots of Oakley's frames are interchangable, and a golf array is the one that comes with multiple lenses, otherwise you have to buy them all separately. Personally, I really like my TN's. They're pretty much indestructible and look cool too.

Polarized and UV blocking are 2 different things -- you can have UV blocking sunglasses without polarized lenses.

Opinions will differ on this, but I would steer clear of polarized lenses for biking. Polarized lenses tend to block the glare & shimmer of water. This makes them very good for boating, etc., but when you're riding on 23mm tires, you WANT to see every puddle and slick spot in the road. I actually think they could be less safe than non-polarized. That and it can be hard to read your computer screen wit polarized lenses.

Oh, and to the OP -- Tifosi makes a lot of good interchangeable lens glasses for relatively modest prices.

The military issued my wife a pair of Oakley M Frames with clear and tinted lens. She thinks they look dumb, so I confiscated them. You can get different colors, clear, polarized, and it's not hard to swap out the lens.

I'm sure Oakley has a lot in the $150 - $200 price range where you can swap out lens. Polarized is great for everyday use. Never thought about the water thing PJT mentioned. I figured if it was bright enough to need tinted glasses, the road would be free of water.

i like "amber" unless i'm riding right into a low sun, then i pop in the "smoke" one

performance bike has switchable lens setups in a number of frames and are typically under $60

hey tank,

what model are you getting? Generally all the sporting models (Mframe and Radar) come with the option of lens change. Personaly i like the Ice Iridium or Black iridium for really sunny days or for when it's low light or overcast the persimmon is the pick. Having a clear lens is good for those days when it's raining or when you are doing your session when it's still dark

dont get bitter, get better

Has anyone tried out the Oakley Flak Jacket? I tried them on and they feel comfortable - I was thinking of the V28 lens color for sunny days and the permission for overcast/low light.

I am getting Oakley Half Jackets with Rx lenses (for some reason I was told that my Rx doesn't work w/ the Flack Jackets). I have settled on 3 sets of lenses: Black Iridium, Clear, and Persimmon Iridium.

Thanks for all the advice.

I like the Tifosi's...

There are several models that come with Dark, Light, amber, and clear for under $50... The ones I have come with openings at the top of the lens which really help prevent them fogging up on hot days.
