Does 30,000 feet of vertical downhill, count as a workout?
Core strength, yes. Some cardio..more if you'd Telemark...definate strength development for the legs and upper body...but the risk of injury to the knees skiing moguls?..I dunno...guess it depends on how important your racing season is to you...go Nordic instead...best of both worlds.

That's what I like to hear!
No moguls/racing for me tho, I'm one of those west coast powder snob types :p
Definitely a lot of core strength benefit to skiing. I think it helps the quads for power on the bike too.
And, I forgot, it's an ALTITUDE workout - grows more red blood cells!

wow, 30,000 ft. you know whenever i snowboard a lot, i get sore namely on my legs and my midsection. i figure that im just strengthening my legs and my center of gravity. i think that qualifies for a workout.

If heard the only altitude training that helps is Livng high (and I mean HIGH) and training low.
Don´t want to get into that argument on this thread but for all you TriTalk listeners you know what I´m talking about.
Maybe if I don´t get too lazy I will start another thread about altitude training myths.

Graemeo wrote the following, inquiring about the benefits of exercise not specifically aimed at swim, bike, run improvement.
Absolutely!
Well, it depends how you ski, but if you get out of breath now and then, and your quads burn after skiing a gnarly mogul field then, yes, you are strengthening your legs.
Plus, core strength and upper body muscles get a workout skiing hard. And it keeps you away from the snack bar so you burn calories, get strong and then there's all that fresh mountain air!
Eee- hah!

On the other hand there is no substitute for the long bike ride that you MUST do each week if you are to finish a HIM comfortably.
