A few questions after finishing my first triathlon season:

1) I'm buying new cleats for my shoes- they are offered in 0, 4.5, or 9 degree (swinng? shift? something like that)...what does this mean and what do you recommend

2) I have a Cervelo Dual (entry tri bike) I bought in Jan- if I were to upgrade components I have heard that wheels would be the way to go.... I am a 21-21.5 mph biker in a race, is it worth it to drop $$ on new wheels? If so, what do you recommend for someone like me? I will be focused on OLY races next season.

Thanks in advance

1. The degrees refer to the amount of "float" in the cleat. That means how much you can rotate your foot before the cleat disengages. I'd avoid 0 degree unless you have perfect setup and no knee issues.

2. Aero race wheels are a subjective choice, but they will definitely benefit you at 21 MPH. All sorts of brands & options out there, but if you want aero, you probably want at least 50-60mm rims up front and as deep as you can handle in the back. Check out Hed, Zipp, Bontrager, PX, Mavic, and Flashpoint for starters. If you're thinking of spending the $$ on race wheels, consider taking the much cheaper plunge & getting an aero helmet too.

I'd go with aero helmet then wheel also. And fwiw, I have the Hed Jet wheels and love them.

Ditto on the Helmet. It's almost as important as aerobars. Plus helmets start at 80 and wheels start at 800.

Like everyone says - Helmet first, wheels next.

Float is good. Save the whales latter, save your knees today.

I'm not sure what else you would want to upgrade on a Dual. It's very well equipped as is! And any bike used to win a world championship title probably isn't entry level (Attn Cervelo: send endorsement check to.... ha ha!)

Thanks for all your input- much appreciated.

By "Aero Helmet" I assume you mean one of those ones that taper way off in the back.

I have a Giro Pneumo, I assume this ISN't what you mean?

Thanks again!

Aero/TT helmets have the long tail and fewer vents than road helmets. Most of them also cover the ears. The Giro Pneumo is a very good road helmet, but it's not aero.

Check out the Giro Advantage 2, Louis Garneu Rocket, LG Chrono, Spuik, and some Rudy Project helmets for an idea of what TT helmets look like. You can look at them at trisports.com
