First Serious attempt
I think all sprints should be about 750m. I am a swimmer, but still....a 20k bike and 5k run are pretty standard, and they're half of an olympic (40k/10k). Since an olympic swim is 1500, why are so many of the swims only 400m or so? They should do a 2000m swim, 12 mile bike, and 1/2 mile run. :D
Lactate threshold and functional threshold power. They're pretty much interchangeable, and they're the speed (or more accurately HR or power) where your body flushes lactic acid at the same speed it is produced. That's the hardest you can hold for 30-90 min or so.
Good luck at the race!!

Not fast enough.
Sept. 30 i am doing my second triathlon, and the first one i am training for at all.
I am obviously new to the sport, but i have earnest aspirations to be a competetive age grouper. What kind of times would you look at for a beginer's sprint and think... that person has potential.
what should reasonable goals be?P.S. the swim is 750m which i think is long for a sprint.
P.P.S. what is LT and FTP?
LT - Lactate Threshold - pace, HR or power output at which your ability to absorb lactate is peaking. Beyond this point you will be running/biking or swimming in red and accumulate lactate in your body. Going beyond this pace especially in longer events is a recepy for disaster or DNF. On the other hand in sprints you will be most of the time at this level or slightly above it as the sprint is very short event. The FTP is the power output corresponding with the LT on bike. It is very useful to know your LT and FTP values and train with them in mind. Helps you make your easy days easy and hard days hard.
As for the expected results - I use the Chicago Tri Club site to come-up with 2-3 different race plans for each event - ideal plan when I'm doing everything as I should, my transitions are lightning fast, etc., then optimal plan which is the result on good day and lastly the less than good plan which is what I tell everyone I'll do :-). My goal is to reach the ideal plan, but I'm quite happy if I reach the result outlined in my good day plan. And if the day is really bad - strong winds, choppy water, hot and humid weather or rain then I go with the last plan. It works great to be ready for different conditions and have few plans in your pocket so you can still enjoy the event.
