Heart rate monitor

so i just bought a heart rate monitor and used it in my first work out.
As cool as it was, i realized at the end i didnt really know how to use it, not on the basic level, but to compliment my training.
i looked up basic info about my MHR and training zone percentages, but if anyone has any good advice on how to use the monitor to really aid in my training i would love to hear it.

Make sure you actually calculate your HR zones -- don't just use a formula as they can be pretty far off. BBB and others on here are way better than me at explaining ways to test for your zones, so I'll leave that part to them :)

I recommend everyone to get a Total Heart Rate Training book from Joe Friel (I should ask him for some profit since I have been recommending the book for few months and to pretty much everybody). It helps you understand the HR zones and structure the training so you are not overextending yourself too much. I found training advice in this book (and also in Triathlete's Training Bible) very good. I recommend everybody to get these two books if they want to train well.

There are several HR training methods out there and they are all SIMILAR...but different in their approaches.

Friel seems to take a very anal and detailed approach to HR training. Narrower training ranges.

Others, like Mark Allen/Maffetone, take a bit looser approach...although that is not a fair description.

After working with these different systems, you'll find that each will define your max HR and target ranges differently, but that your actual numbers will be within 10-15 beats per minute difference. Throw in your direct experience from training with an HRM for several months and you'll find out which system works best for you.

I don't think you can go wrong with either approach: Friel or Allen/Maffetone. Just pick one and stick with it for a complete season...from base to your last race. If you're game, pick another HR strategy for the following season.

Triathlon is just one lifelong experiment.

best thing to do now is to get the HRmax test. That is to find out what your heart will max out on, it hurts to figure it out though, but critical for future training if you want to get the best results. Use the Joe Friel zones for training. We talked about how to get the HRmax before (see below) and you can also google it from the web. It will be diff for all three events (S,B,R,) Not SO important for the swim as it is for bike and run, best if used with a power meter as well. But that is another story. Esentially a good key is if you know the HRmax for the run, the bike HRmax is "roughly" 10-12 beats/min slower/lower. Get the max's and then use Friel cals wich work on the LT zone which for people is around 80-85% of the HRmax. Here is the link
