I just got a professional bike fitting and I need to get a shorter bike stem. How do I select a bike stem ? What should I look for ? Reason I ask is that the aluminum stems weigh just as little as the carbon ones at a fraction of the cost.

I'd stay away from carbon stems. Even a lot of pros wont ride them yet. Stems dont really weigh a lot unless you're getting a real cheap one. Most important are proper drop/ rise and reach. I like 4 bolt face plates vs the 2 bolt, for more even pressure on the bars.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Aluminium...I like Ritchey Pro...really light...looks nice...not too expensive.
Carbon stems and bars...yikes! Too much can happen and then you're replacing..

Fear of failure aside, many parts like seat posts, stems and bars very often have alum versions that are lighter than most of the carbon versions. Too many people just assume carbon is always lighter than alum.
This, of course, does not speak to CF's other advantages - vibration dampening and BLING factor.
Nor does it speak to Alum's advantage - stiff, light, cheap, and durable.

I am just saying . . .
